Thinking about buying Suzuki SX-4

Post by tonflo »

I'm finishing my degree & looking for a real job. The Touring Wgn is getting old & only gets 18-19mpg (lead foot). Read a review 2 wks ago about the Suzuki SX-4. 2L 4cyl, 28mpg hiway, selectable AWD (i-AWD), EBD, ABS, 6 air bags. If you get the Sport version you get a 6CD changer (plays mp3 & WMA), elec. stability & traction control, keyless entry & start. All for about $16K. Way cheaper than any Subie. Went & looked at one last wknd. Very nice looking car, decent cargo space in back, lots of nice gadgets inside (mpg display, alarm, etc.). If I can find a good job & pay off the NSX, I think this is a definite maybe.

What do you guys think?

The selectable AWD really catches my eye since you can choose FWD (better mpg), auto AWD (computer kicks in rears when it thinks you need it) similar to Subaru, or lock drives all 4 wheels for snow/ice/mud up to 36mph. Rumors of an SWT (Suzuki version of Sti) version coming someday. There is a diesel in Europe but they aren't sending it here.

Also weight to power is similar to Subaru:
2789lb/143hp= 19.5 lb/hp for Suzuki. Subie lists weights as 2730-3300 lbs depending on model. I'm assuming wagons are heaviest so 3300lb/160hp=20.6lb/hp. So performance should be similar.

I think they're extremely cool looking. Better than my previous favorite, the Honda Fit.

I would definitely roll in one.

BUT... it is a Suzuki. Their reliability record isn't all that stellar, for one. I don't know where they are now, but when I last checked, Suzuki was the worst-made Japanese car. Still better than the domestics, but waaaay below Toyota and Honda and such.

Also, I don't know how many Suzuki dealers you have in your vicinity, but we only have one for all of Orlando, and they're trying to run it off an old used-car lot and have ran into financial issues several times.

Isn't Suzuki in bed with GM? Or was it Isuzu? I forget.

Suzukis are crap. Every one Ive ever been in feels like it was assembled by children with downs syndrome.

Nothing fits. Everything rattles. They feel like they're going to fall over when you go around corners. They feel unfinished, unresearched, uninspired and uncared for.

I hate them.

Motorweek is going to run a test on an SX-4 on next weekend's episode. Will have to see what they think. Check your local listings. The quality thing worries me, but the long warranty helps. Although it does stink to be using the warranty all the time.

It's great having a car that you'll not spend alot on repair wise. It's not so great when it's in the shop more than in your driveway.
