Have up to a foot of snow hitting my area tomorrow. The brunt of it will come during the morning commute. Let's just say I'll be having some fun.
The only potential downside is other drivers. The first snow always seems to cause the complete freaking idiots to put their car into something inconducive to everyone else. Like other cars, poles, curbs, medians, ditches, houses, etc.. Hopefully I'll get some donut/powerslide action in before everything's plowed.
New snow at close to the freezing point has a coeficient of friction that approaches zero.
At the other extreme at 35 below F most tires lose their adhesive qualities.
Subtle (normally aspirated engines suck):
05 Legacy GT Wagon with Cobb chip.
62 Alfa Romeo Spider- had a 1.6 L with 80 hp, now 2 L with 160 torque. Curb weight 2050 lbs.
93 Leg Twgn fmic, vf34, etc. ((sold))
10 inches today. Most of it fell during rush hour and came down quick. My rear defrosters could barely keep up - rear window wiper mod a serious interest now. The drive to work was riddled with slow-ass cars and stupid people. I borrowed a guy my snow brush, who was stuck stuck sideways at a stop light in his Firebird, and said "that's really not a winter car dude". He replied "yeah, I know, and bald tires don't help". The light turned green, he gave back my brush, and I said out the window "buy a Subaru" as I took off at a quick, solid pace. No stuckey for me.
I could have made it to work in 30 to 45 minutes (normally 25) if morons weren't in my way. It ended up taking about an hour and fifteem minutes, mainly because some jagoff cracked his car into something right at the last main intersection before work, causing a parking lot to form behind him. I took the unplowed right lane whenever possible, but people ahead of me saw fit to cut over when they saw me creeping on them. Some got themselves stuck, leaving me pissed and driving around them. The car wasn't too squirrely either in the deep snow, it just cut right through. Everyone on the radio kept saying "it's bad, stay home". Not me. I was enjoying dropping the clutch and giving a little spin when people next to me, most notably someone in a Eclipse, had trouble even moving. Trucks were not good either - light in the rear makes things difficult. Didn't see any accidents occur in front of me this time.
I drove right out of my snowed-in parking spot as everyone else had some difficulty/needed a push. Roads were pretty cleared up for the drive home, save the side streets I took on purpose. They were pretty nice to turn into/out of - little sideways action quite nice. Freeway was excellent and traffic was pretty normal. Went to the Checker near my house to get new wiper blades, put them on, and proceeded to "try them out". Most people would have thrown some snow on the windshield to do so. I let the huge, mostly virgin side parking lot do it for me. Sideways, donuts, powerslides, 180's, reverse 180's, you name it I probably did it. I put her right into a snow drift, stopped, and drove right through. I could not get my car stuck for the life of me. I drove back over to the lights by Checker to clean off the car and the supremely packed tires/wheel wells. I look over at someone in a truck attempting to have a little fun in the somewhat easier side of the lot. He did a couple dounts, stopped, and that was as far as he got. Stuck in the not so deep snow.
I love my Subaru. Damn near the best thing to drive in snow, rain, whatever. When everyone else is hiding at home, I'm out playing. Why doesn't everyone else get the big picture.
PS - Please don't read this like I was an arrogant knob driving wrecklessly. I did all of this in a safe manner. Never did I put anyone else at risk. Hell, there wasn't much risk for me either. I just kept it relitively chill around other cars/people, just in case something did happen. There's times to have fun and there's time to play. I just like the playing alot, and who doesn't?
Wheels were a bit unbalanced on the freeway. I wonder why.
Did a little drift run through the trailer court behind my house this evening. They don't plow/salt all that well. Was so fun it almost looked like I knew what I was doing.
My ABS hasn't worked since I put all my new brake shit on. I locked them up and put it into first at 15 t0 20. Did a wicked drift around a 180 degree turn. I wanna try going forward around 20 mph and punching it in reverse.
