I know what I'm doing Sunday

Post by jamal »

Finally installing the 20mm 2.5GT front swaybar I've had sitting in my room.

I got a package:

Yay another sticker that gets to go in the drawer with all the other ones that aren't on my car.

$50 Swaybar hotness:

That's a 53% increase in swaybar stiffness right there, which should go along nicely with the stiff bushings and kartboy endlinks. This is probably only going to hold me over for a short period of time before I go shopping for bigger front and rear bars. I like the sound of 22mm front 20-24mm rear.

I got the bushings from racecomp engineering for $38 shippped or something. I can't use the GT bushings because the BD/GD cars have a bigger mounting bracket and bushings.

My twgn is v. happy with the 20 on front and the rear 20-24, set at 20.

Works good on mountain roads with a full load of camping gear as well as a canoe on the roof.

With 18 feet of the latter , one is interested in some understeer, rather than oversteer---especially in cross winds.

my xt6 came stock with 19mm

they're nice but I still get some body roll

is it possible that body roll is just from my kinda worn out springs/struts?

(sorry for hijack, but it's kind of relevant, I swear! ;) )
yo mang, can I get a rootshell?

Yeah, but a swaybar is twice as effective at reducing body roll as springs. I have fairly stiff springs already though too (224/195 lb/ft).

All Alcyones had a .29 drag coefficient.

Derrick, I thought you had a 20mm front bar? Isn't yours AWD?

Either way, you can still have lots of body roll from worn-out struts.

well I was lazy/sleeping most of the day and didn't get much done. After tailgating yesterday, then going out for sushi/sake bombing, then having a party at my house I was tired and slept in with the lady friend. I did just clean up the bar though.

Rubberized underbody coating, bbq cleaner I found downstairs, steel wool, sandpaper, and some rags:

As you can see the 2nd gen bushings are bigger. 1st gen bushings are the same front and rear.

Image

Sandpaper and bbq cleaner worked pretty well to clean off the surface rust and grime:

The bushings fit perfectly over the coating, although there is a small gap when I put it on the unpainted section. Maybe I'll measure it with some calipers tomorrow. I expect this spray on stuff to work pretty well.

it is "technically" 19mm but 20mm bushings fit fine 8)

I'll see about the struts, thanks

Swaybars increase the effective spring rate of a spring. Under cornering load, you can get excessive body-roll simply from having under-damped struts (lots of bounciness), or worn struts.

Big bars can hurt handling in cars that are already under-damped to begin with.
