Anyone running an STi tmic? Fitment issues?

My search didn't yield much. But I've read about Saab 900's, various fmic's, slant jdm wrx tmic installs and US spec wrx tmics.

Yes Legacy's are limited in respect to tmic's, BUT From what I've read WRX tmic's are a b!tch to install for some, but not everyone. Some re-work is required.

So does that mean that teh larger STi intercoolers are way to large to fit and rework?

I'm just asking because I have a chance to scoop an STi intercooler locally from a swap for a few hundred bucks.

Any advice would rock. I might have to pioneer somerthing.

My conclusion: I havent found a Leggy here with an STi tmic, so there must be real fitment issues, thus no one doing it.

Not necessarily.

It may be because people charge alot for STI TMICs, while you can find lots of WRX intercoolers for cheap as dirt. IE: I got my WRX TMIC for less than $50, while at the same time on ebay, people were charging $150+ for STI TMICs.

If I could get my hands on an STI intercooler, I could get some dimensions and compare them to my WRX unit.......

JDM STi Version 7: 15% dimensionally larger core size than the USDM STi IC
Helix: 19” x 8” x 4”

How do those dimensions match your wrx top mount?

If there accurate, do you think an the STi would fit by your eye-ball guesstamite?

I would say not without a goodly bit of 'massaging'.

The main problem I see is the 7.3" tall. As it sits, my WRX i/c is VERY snug between the firewall and the TB.

The extra width wouldn't hurt (plenty of room, especially if you change clutch MC reservoirs), and I think you could make the extra thickness fit with a minimal of extra work (I had to bang on some stuff to get mine to fit, but it wouldn't be a whole lot more banging the way I see it).

I think I might buy it and try it out. I'm sure theres some way of getting it in there.

BUT, if its going to be a huge pita, and I already know the benefits of a FMIC, is killing myself over a topmount really worth it?

I'm going to find out.

Might need to do some custom fab work for the piping. Its probably possible. Especially if you bought an extra TD and trimmed it along with the outlet of the intercooler. That'd save some room.

Does anyone know the sizing for the JDM STi Version 4 TMIC? I heard its roughly the same size as the WRX intercooler, but I want to make sure.

Any updates Ray? I am looking to intercool and if the larger STi top mount can fit I would go for that.....
