OK to use newer (smaller) model turbo oil filter?

Post by shemoves »

I notice that the new OEM turbo oil filters are smaller than the ones I normally buy at the store for my Legacy SS. Wondering if it is Ok to use them.

If anyone could answer soon that'd be great. I'm taking a long distance trip with the car in about an hour and I want to make sure it's alright to use the new oil filter.

I say that it is ok to use them. I have used them for the last couple of oil changes with zero problems.

There shouldn't be a problem using them, because that's what Subaru says to use ;)

ALL EJ 4cyl engines use the same OEM filter.

subaru discontinued the 060 (15208AA060) oil filter and now they only use the 100 (15208AA100). all 4cyl ej engines can use a 100 oil filter... but not all can use a 060. the 060 is bigger... the 100 was designed for the STi's and the new cars with the equal length headers which severly limit space, but since they work on the older cars they just dumped the 060 filter and switched to the 100.

its not that they should not be used on STi's its that on some STi's they wont fit. if they do fit it wont hurt at all to use them on an STi.

There are a run of filters that are prone to leaking, so keep an eye out for that...to the point of a couple blown motors.

why didnt anyone mention that when you use the smaller new filter, to not put quite as much oil in on oil changes? the new filter holds less oil, so like use 1/5th qt or so less oil.
