What do you think of my plan?
This spring Im hoping to swap my ej22t into my RS. Of course while the motor is out of the legacy, Id like to build it up some. I have an idea of some of the parts Im going to use. Id like to know what people think of what I have planed. Im also open to suggestions.
For the motor I plan on making it a 2.35. My buddy is going to give me some DOHC heads off a 98 RS that I was going to have fully done up. Id like to get like a 8.5-9 CR, maybe even mid 9s. I would also like to try to pick up a factory oil cooler, weither its off a legacy or an older JDM STi.
I'm still trying to pick a turbo. I would like a VF22, but Id like a turbo that will make full boost by 3500. From what Ive read that VF22 cant do that. I was considering a VF34. Of course Id get one from thats had some work done to it. If anyone has any suggestions for a turbo that will make full boost by 3500, and will make crazy power, let me know.
I think for the tranny Im going to go with an STi 6 speed, and have the gears strengthened, and probably see if I can get some stronger syncros for it. Im also going to look into this: http://www.neetronics.com/neet/sensors- ... &Itemid=31
I'm not sure what exhaust parts Im going to get yet, but I want an external wastegate, and probably catless, and a 3-3.5" exhaust.
I think thats most of what I have planned. So give me some input.

I wish it was an endless bank account, I just plan on working my butt off.
My goal is to have a crazy RS thats streetable, but unbeatable on the track. I would like to reach atleast 400whp. Ive already done all the suspension work on my RS, so it handles great, it just needs more power.

What engine management? That is key for a turbo RS. And what year is your RS. The SOHC heads on RS's are very good heads and will make your EM headaches simpler if you stick with just swapping in the built shortblock.
I just finished a build like this with, VF39 and running emanage ultimate.

Retired but still rocking a 98 Coupe with the heart of a turbo legacy :)
Wouldn't you be farther ahead with a dog box instead of trying to strengthen a 6sp? I'm just currious as to what a good 6sp will cost (adding in the additional work you want to do to it) as compared to an existing 5 sp with a nice dog box installed.
Plus I know most dog boxes will hold 500hp easily and I personally don't believe you can beat that mean sound!

Do you really want to know what I think?
Don't tear apart a relatively rare and unique car like an SS to build an RS-T. If you want an RS-T buy an Ej257 block new from the dealership. Not only will it be cheaper than putting together a built Ej22T bottom end, but it will get you to your power goal more easily. And sell someone who will appreciate it your SS. That's my honest opinion about it. But then you asked on a 1st gen Legacy forum where we hold our Ej22T's dear...

For EM Im looking into a Link Plus. For the tranny, I thought about a dog box, and if I can get a better deal on one than a 6speed, Ill get a dog box. My buddy has an STi he just had to part out that had ~430whp with the stock tranny and drivetrain. His tranny started to go, so thats why Id want to get a stronger 6speed.
I could easily go get an ej257 or ej255, but I decided on the ej22t when I looked at my options. Also, I appreciate my SS. While I do plan on taking the motor out, Im not going to scrap the shell. I plan on putting my RS engine and tranny into the legacy.
What kind of turbo do you think Id need to reach 400?

I would have to agree with Matt.
For the amount of money you would have to put into modifying the EJ22T, you can get a EJ257 and not have to ruin the legacy at all.
My suggestion would be to find a wrecked STI and use that as a base for your starting parts.
That way you can intergrate the harnesses and have the options of plug n play tuning for the computer, as well as use the experience of A LOT of other people before you in what they had to do to get the STI engine to those goals.
When you go out and go custom all the way, the costs will be very high, and you have no one to use as a base point from what turbo/ engine/ tuning points to start at.

I didn't even get into that aspect of it. Doing this RS-T build piecemeal is going to be in the $8000-12,000 range if it's really to see 400whp. Hell, even to see 300whp it will be up in that range. For that kind of money a complete STI swap from a wrecked USDM car can be had, and the Legacy can be used as a daily driver during the month+ it takes to pull off the swap. Why take down both cars at once to do this thing? Plus, the Legacy isn't going to run worth a damn with a Ej25 in it on a stock Ej22T ECU...

Leave the SS together, they are getting rare enough as it is...
Matt knows his shit, and he is right about doing an STi swap...it would be so much more cost effective...as you can pick up a rolled STi for around $10-12k. Also, the STi engine management has ENDLESS options for tuning for large turbos, so you wouldn't have to deal with endless tuning of a standalone and whatnot.
Just my (educated) $.02

After a little thought. I have changed my vote on the tranny situation. I think I would go for the 6sp. For the amount of HP you can run through it its great. That being said. I would run on it stock until I blew it up. Then send the 6sp out for a dog box. The 6sp dog box appears to be built like a brick house. I saw a picture of the gears somewhere. It looks like you could damn near throw the thing in a peter built.

On that note...I think I may have seen somewhere in the parts shed where he was selling one of his old dog boxes. If its still available that might be a way to go. I trust him enough to buy used parts. The guy definitley knows his gears!
