How to make it fit???

Post by livestrong14 »

I have a set of 04' WRX wagon springs sitting in our shop. Will they work with stock SS struts and tophats? Would this be a good/cheap setup for auto-X? I only want the lower the car about 1-1.5 inches in front and .5-1" in the back.

Any input/help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Are they factory springs Devan?

If so, they will actually lift your car...

To make them fit I think you will need 1991 Non-Turbo rear tophats...

hey Nick, they are stock 04 WRX springs. We've had them since this summer. I just need something cheap, and before March to get the car lower and handle a little better.

No they won't, no he doesn't.

They'll fit fine and lower the car slightly.

livestrong did you read the thread titled "04+ impreza rear springs on 1st gens?"

I am pretty sure that all of the Sport Sedan springs were not tapered, even 91's, and therefore do not have tophats for tapered springs...therefore requiring the hats off an NA car...

Read: "converting to later model strut assemblies
If you have a....And want strut/spring combo......Then you need
90-91 AWD....GC/GM/GF (93-2001impreza)........FP, RP
.......................GD/GG (2002+ Impreza)................FP, RP, SPT
.......................BD/BG (95-99 legacy)....................FP, RP
.......................BE/BH (2000- legacy)....................Probably FP, No fit rear!
.......................SF (98-02 forester)........................Probably FP & RP
.......................SG (03- forester ...........................Probably FP & RP
.......................BC/BF fwd.....................................Struts Don’t Fit! "

As far as lifting the car...remember that his car has around 135k miles on it, and the factory springs would have sagged...therefore, using the 04 springs would lift it just because they have less miles and consequently less wear on them... I have seen pictures and read threads of SS owners who put WRX springs on their cars and measuring them to ride higher...

I could be partially wrong, but consider these points before you go discounting everything I say...

Possibly, but I don't think there is a difference between turbo and n/a spring diameters. Also that section of the compendium you posted doesn't differentiate between 02-03 and 04+ Impreza springs.

Either that or I've been giving a lot of wrong advice...

There absolutely is a difference between Turbo and NA spring diameters...

90-91 Legacy Non Turbo cars had tapered springs

All turbos have normal non-tapered springs (same as 02-03 WRX ones)

92-94 had the normal setup like the turbos

I believe the reason that it does not differentiate in the compendium is that for 90-91 cars you need tophats and whatnot regardless of what year the WRX springs came from

Incorrect sir. All 90-91 Legacies have tapered rear springs. I have a set of brand-new 91 Turbo specific rear springs sitting at my house right now that are definitely tapered.

Sorry Nick, you're striking out :). The WRX springs lowered my car significantly, although I don't know how much. Close to, or possibly at, an inch.

Then how come like 3 people have put WRX springs on their cars and told me that they lifted their car?!

All the things I've seen about raised suspension involve using both struts and springs. subylvr2212 has pictures of a side by side comparison of wrx and 90-91 springs. It also could be that the 02-03 and 04+ impreza springs are different lengths.
