Removing fuse thingy for FWD on AWD

Post by redlineracer »

Theres a little fuse holder looking thing that is on the passenger strut tower that says FWD. I was wondering if you can disable that or something that can make my car only use the RWD. Will that screw up things in the transaxle differential or cause problems with the tranny? I would like to make my car have more power to the rear wheels than the front or just totally eliminate the FWD and just go AWD so I can do some drifting or mad burnouts. Thanks.

ok so a random question bringing this thread back form the dead

what kind of fuse has to be put in the FWD fuse holder? 25 amp? 30 amp etc... and would it increase fuel economy?
oh yeah and would long term use of the FWD mode damage anything or be bad in general for the drivetrain?

...continuing the original question of this thread if you wanted to make the car RWD can't you just remove the front drive axles? just an idea which is most likely wrong but hey i just thought i'd put it out there

i cant remember what it is that goes in it, might even just be 15, but i dont remember. the manual does not specify the fuse

i had the FWD fuse in for about a month, because the car did not have a driveshaft in it. it drove more or less the same, gas mileage does not change, performance does not change, handling does not change. the only thing i notice was that when it rained i spun the front wheels quite a bit when taking off.
there is really no point in having the fuse in unless it is necessary.

you cant really do a RWD conversion on a 4EAT, the rear end receives power from a clutch pack. i suppose in theory if you kept the clutches locked at all times it would work, but it would probably wear out in no time.
there is more to it than taking the front axles out, like what to do with the front diff. and wheel bearings and what not, but it has been done several times before.

Sorry for the 2 year bump but this is weird i bought my 92 Subie legacy last month and when i bought it it was in FWD mode. i mean the Fuse was in there...i've been going back and forth between removing it cause i want AWD (it just snowed here) but i was avised by my friends to leave it in there cause frankly we didn't know if doing that would harm the car at all or not. so my question is...is it safe to take out the fuse? and did most Subies when they where new come with the fuse in them? how will i tell if there's a problem like Torque bind? what is Torque bind?

The car comes from the factory with no fuse there. Since your car is AWD, it is designed to operate in that mode all the time. It is possible the seller put the fuse there to "save fuel" (which it really doesn't) or to hide a problem with the transmission. Pull the fuse and you'll soon find out, I suppose.
