Couldn't you just unscrew the gas cap to relieve pressure?

The fuel lines stay pressurized even when the cap is off. All parts of the fuel system aren't open to each other.

I once was pulling parts from a car in a junkyard. It had been there at least a couple of months, and didn't even have the fuel tank in it. When I pulled a fuel line under the hood it sprayed me.

...because you failed to protect your eyes with goggles?

Sorry, that was harsh. I definitely don't always take the time to don the requisite eye protection when working on cars either. Your experience is a good reminder that we all should. Nearly all eye injuries are preventable.
