What trannies swap in...

Post by shemoves »

I've been looking for a WRX transmission to put into the '92 SS, but am having trouble finding one that is not broken. I was thinking; however, of opening it up to any of the other subaru turbo models (new legacy, outback, etc.) Will those trannies bolt up ok?

more specifics...looking at an 05 Legacy GT tranny. Any idea what I'd need to get that into my '92 SS?

You'll run into the same issues as you will with the WRX tranny.....plus not sure what the final drive ratio of the other ones are.

So I'd need all four axels, the rear diff, and maybe the driveshaft? Need new clutch/flywheel? bolt locations (except having to drill the one extra for mounting the starter) all the same?

You shouldn't need a new driveshaft, nor the clutch & flywheel. As long as you use parts all from the turbo legacy (clutch, pp, & flywheel), you should be fine.

The electrical connector for the neutral switch & reverse switch will probably be different, and you'll need to swap out the speedo heads to use the mechanical drive.

A bit confused. Do you mean I can pretty much bolt up the modern Legacy GT tranny as long as I use the stock stuff from my '92 SS?

first you need to know the front and center differential ratios of the 05 trans, either that or you get the 05 rear diff too.

I am pretty sure it is 4.11

I've already got the LSD/axles out of a '96 JDM STi too (which is 4.11).

I picked up an 05 Outback Sport Wagon 5 speed which has a 3.90 gear ratio to match the rear ratio on my in my 93 4eat turbo wagon. It is the easy way to go and I found a 3.90 LSD rear as a bonus. The only problem may be the use of an electronic speedo gear sensor, but the hole in the tranny looks the same, and I'm told that it may only be a matter of removing the sensor and putting a gear drive cable in it.
