91 auto tranny swap

Post by su bar u guy »

I have a 91 legacy n/a awd sedan and have a couple of questions. First, are 92-94 automatic transmissions better than 90 an 91's? My Subaru dealer says they didn't have as many problems with the 92-94's. Next, if I put a 92-94 transmission in my 91 is all the wiring compatable with my 91 computer? Also, my 91 has 4:11 gears. Do all 92-94's have 3:90 gears?

yes the 92-94's had 3.90 gearing. that would be the first issue. Second I think you may want to get a computer from the 92-94 model. The 91 computer would probably work, but may not take advantage or have some of the better programming.....

It's very possible....especially if you didn't swap the TCU's. If you swapped TCU's and it's still doing that......I'm not sure what to think.

But if you have a 90 TCU and 93 tranny....then yeah I would definitely think there could be some compatibility or extra "stuff" in the 93 tranny that the 90 TCU doesn't know how to control....and could be causing your problem.

technical service bulletin.

They are released by subaru. There are a couple places us normal folk can find them. I believe Alldata or something like that has them. However you do need a subscription.

Just to help, Im using a 95 impreza transmission in one of my 90 Legacy.

Later transmissions are "better" usually because of small changes, like the check valve that was mentioned. Performance wise and durability should be equal though. The problem with 90 automatics was solved with an add on external filter to catch the crap left over from production.
