So, im down in austin having a good time. I found premo-parking by 6th st, and were out at the clubs living it up, cause its marti gra weekend. Sooooooo about 3am i return to my beloved legacy, hop in about the same time as about 6 drunk people next to me are gettin into their POS dodge ram truck. i start my car and am about to pull out...but they go first...looks alil close then SCRAPE...best of all they took off..i hate this fuckin place they have the worst drivers on record..i need a new front left fender, corner light AND turbo bumper all in white... and all this with my new tranny in the mail....I HATE TEXAS.......prolly didnt have insurance sons o bitches.

I'm in Wichita Falls right know, and I too have a growing dislike for TX. And this is the "Good" base as far as USAF pilot training. Earlier today I was driving to do some mountain biking and had to grab this picture as it is as cliche TX as it gets. I didn't quite get everything in the picture, out of frame are a bunch of cows and an oil derrick in the field on the right.
What you can see:
Mesquite trees (really the only native tree in the area)
Giant Bull statue thing at the ranch entrance(way down there)
Red(there's something about red full size SUV's around here) Ford Excursion that is finally passing me after riding my ass for 15 minutes at 100mph(I was going 80, speed limit 70) You can't see the "Jesus fish family" you know where there's a fish for mom and pop and a little fish for each kid

Surely not all Texans are that ignorant. The Texans with SUV's are just as rednecked about sensible driving as anyone with an SUV. There just seem to be very few of the ones who really piss you off who don't have Texas license plates.
With that said, I have to go to Ft. Worth next weekend, Big Bend in March.

Well, Big Bend will be OK.

Texas is an interesting place......I've been here for a little over five years now.

I definitely have my likes and dislikes about it. I have even come to not dislike Houston as much as I did when I first moved down here.

The one thing I will say though is that people in general are for the most part nicer then some of the northern cities I travel to, have lived.

Every place has its dumbasses....and we have ours.....just like everyone else.

My girlfriend has talked about the friendliness of people in the South as well. She's from Ohio and still finds it wierd if I stop to talk to a neighbor outside for 20 minutes while walking to work. She says that they're just unfriendly in Ohio.

I still stand behing the notion that for a jerk to really show that they're a jerk, they opt for an SUV or pickup. This isn't saying that everybody with an SUV or pickup is a jerk; just that the jerks like those things as well, and it shows.

We have those as well as a different sort of dumbasses locally. There are often cars being driven in such poor (dangerous) condition that it's frightening to pass by them. I find brake pads, shoes, mufflers, wheels(!), and all kinds of car parts in the road when I'm driving or cycling. I don't get it. If my car was in the shape of what I see so many of the locals driving, I'd just walk instead. At least I know I'd get there that way and in some cases, it'd be faster.

I liked how random people on the road would wave at you in the small towns in texas. It was the same way where I grew in Nebraska.

I like living where people are suspicious of strangers. When I first went to Detroit and someone tried to talk to me on an elevator at 3AM I eyed him warily and readied myself to nail him in the throat with my keys through my fingers. Up here you don't talk to people in situations like that and all the better - why would anyone want to make small talk with strangers? Then there was the time in Kansas where I got stuck by some old dude at a gas station talking to me because of my MA plate. Dude, I'm trying to get back home from LA before the next millenium! (49.5 hrs total actually)

Never been to Texas, thanks for saving me the trip.

I don't like it when people act like jerks in social situations. You don't have to tell a life story but you don't have to be mean to people. Why be that way? I mean, I can understand being a little wary of fake closeness but ready to fight...?

You just don't talk to people unless you're trying to feel them out for a mugging or you're just a wackado. Not talking to people isn't being mean, it's quietly pretending they're not there. It's actually considerate. I know I have five things on my mind at any one time and making small talk with some ass on an elevator that I'll never see again is a distraction I don't need and I'm sure I can't be the only one, though I know there are plenty of people who never have anything on their minds. Maybe those are the ones discussing nothing with people they don't know which would explain why they think nothing of it. The guy never knew I was ready for him to move - I was pleasant to him.

Everywhere I've travelled abroad has been the same way. The only people coming up to talk to me in Italy (besides the two hot chicks in Sorrento) were Gypsies trying to rip me off and in Egypt anyone who approaches you is trying to rip you off. In Greece it was a bar owner trying to pull a bar scam. Being from Boston, I was ready for them. That guy in the elevator would still be trying to get the US embassy to help them without their passport.

It really depends on the situation and location. There are places I won't talk to people....but other places I feel more inclined. This also has to do with the possibility I may run into them in the future and need their help....assuming it's a small town type atmosphere.

Big city...not as much....but even with big cities....it's sometimes pretty crazy to see people and find out you know them through another friend...etc.

I don't know, I don't go around starting conversations with strangers most of the time but there are times I will say at least a couple sentences like "This cold is a bitch isn't it" or something like that. But it really all depends on the situation and if I say something to someone it's relevant to the situation. Sitting in a waiting room for a car, the ER. Most of the time I won't speak to folks but I'm a pretty good judge of character too though. But you're right, it's wise to be wary of people trying to get all cozy with you in certain situations. I guess what I'm saying is that it depends on the situation. But also, I was brought up in the country so it's almost the total opposite. In the woods, you want to know who is around you.
