Is a stock axle back STi muffler worth putting on my 94 SS?

Post by greg donovan »

i have a friend who is going to give me a stock axle back secion STi muffler for free. is it worth the trouble to put on my 94 SS?

not looking for a performance gain. mine is getting "old" and one of the tips is gone so this would look tons better.

is it much louder?

Update as of 3/12:

i now have the axle back.

how much do i need to add? it looks like about 3 inches.

should i add a piece with two flanges in between the axelback and the midpipe?

or should i cut the midpipe and slipfit in a section of pipe and clamp it in place?

i would think that having a new section of pipe with flanges made would be the best.

yeah, my last sedan had a 2.25" catback w/a couple cheapie reasonators on it. it was loud and fun. but that got a bit old. the stock SS muffler is too quiet.

I think the STi axleback would fit the bill well...

my one concern is that the thing is huge (tall), will it fit?

yes the sti axle back will fit you car. my friends car is a 3" tubo back but has an sti axle back to keep the cops off his back.

its a really deep sound. its cool, but i like the sound of a suby uncorked.

I just had the Sti axleback installed and its a lot more fun driving to work. Muffler shop did a great job making the mods to make it fir perfectly. Since I have a wagon, the tip doesn't poke out, but that's ok.

Just installed mine yesterday. looks and sounds great. much better than the rusted POS that was on there before, and the added chrome bling is also nice.

I ran one for a while untill i got my bosal 3" defiantly better then the stock. I would suggest getting some kartboy long hangers to ease fitment. I ran it with a long bellmouth dp to the stock midpipe (despite much debate on this it is exactly the same size dia. as the sti mid) to the sti axleback without any extensions

I couldnt get mine to fit without shortening this one... Its a fairly simple weld, and wasnt worth fussing with in comparison to just cutting and welding it...
