I tried to avoid it, but the driveshaft got pulled removing it. The internals at the transmission end seem to fit back in place, but the boot is still disfigured. Does this indicate something still out of place internally? It would be nice to avoid opening it if possible.

Yep. The "balls" weren't all the way in the slots. The grease is still like new. It should be; the axle has only a few thousand miles on it.

Yeah, be careful with those, I had a higher mileage axle come apart and I put the balls back in and repacked it... My buddy said that it's like switching bearings but not races, so they'll wear quicker. A low miles axle wont be effected, since they haven't had time to wear themselves, but I know I went from a little clicking at tight turns to a full crispy noise in 500 miles.
Oh and has anyone found a better source for the rear ones... It turns out that you can get the front axles all day long for 40 to 50 bucks new, but finding rears are like pulling teeth. *first gen legacy types*
