Rims do not hold air!! WT*

Post by Radial GT1 »

My 93 SS rims do not hold air for crap. The tires are brand new, I have had them remounted twice and they still go flat? Anyone else have this problem? :smt012

All of them? Alloy does degrade over, time and is always semi-permeable, but all four would be strange even if it were caused by damage.

Did they replace the valve stems? A lot of times reused shitty valve stems (or even new shit ones) leak. I always use the metal ones and never have any problems. My car's been sitting over a year and still has enough air to get safely to a gas station for a refill.

Get a spray bottle, fill it with water and a little (few drops or so) dish soap. Spray the entire tire, including the bead area, and the valve stem. (take the cap off) Watch for the bubbles to point out the leak.

I've seen lots of alloys corrode in the bead area giving slow leaks. It can be cleaned up, and the leaks will stop, but not all places give a crap enough to actually do it when mounting new tires.

They have not replaced the valve stems. I was back there when they remounted them, and they did grind on the mounting areas. 3 of the 4 of them leak. They go almost flat in the matter of about a little over a week. I am a gas station regular for free air.

Why didn't they replace the valve stems?

That's the most likely suspect in my mind.

Becuase the tires plus here in town are cheep bastards or something.

I think that 2 of them where bent a bit. They seemed to have a tough time balancing them if I remember right. I just repained them before I learned they where bent, so I am going to try the valve stems when I get back into town before I pitch them.

Unless someone has got a good set of rims off something that looks good...

Good call on that^

I am in Iraq right now, it can picture my car at the base right now. 3 flat tires. I will be taking care of that when I get home.

Valve stems are the first thing. Thanks!
