Opinions on Exhaust for 92 EJ22-T

Hello everyone! ive been reading exhaust threads for a while now, and my friend (with a 2000 2.5 RS) just got billstein exhaust for his 2.5 N/A and it has completly lost the boxer rumble, and now sounds like my neigbors 89 honda + loud rumble.

from what ive read, the WRX sound comes from TURBO'd boxer engines, and the N/A dont have too much rumble.

all i know is that my buddy's 2.5 RS used to sound sweet. now its weak.

i LOVE MY BOXER RUMBLE.

i want to KEEP my boxer rumble.

Does anyone have an exhaust on their EJ22-T that they have purchased, that has sounded super sweeeet, keeping that awesome boxer rumble, and maybe putting a couple lb/ft of torque in their pocket?

strictly opinions, i'd like to see who has what. this is for my daily driver / weekend rally beast / 3am dirt road runner.

(p.s... i have a Greddy Exhaust off of a 2.5 RS never modified, never installed on my car, but was on a 2.5 RS for about a year. This is for sale, just thought i'd throw it out there.)

Three-inch divorced DP, necked down to two 2.5 inch resonators, no cat, with a Vibrant silencer with two 2.25 out pipes.

The two out pipes gives the best sounding exhaust on any car I've had.

And it doesn't look rice.

Latest add on is a QTP exhaust cut out from where the pipe bends after the axle to get to the silencer.

This continues the straight pipe with a final down turn just before the trailer hitch.

Still good sound and quite loud. On and off with a switch, and when open the spool up is faster.

Didn't change the headers so the "boxer rumble" is still there.

I was running a 4" DP w/ bellmouth to a 3" custom exhaust w/ a high-flow cat and fart can. It sounded sweet! Like better than any other Subaru I've ever heard. The only thing that comes close is the STi. I had the custom 3" DP back first and the DP didn't make any difference in the rumble. You could just hear the turbo way better. And those fart cans seem to sound better over time as the glass pack wears out.

As long as you don't get an equal length header you should be fine with whatever you get. I've heard that the Borla style headers sound awesome. Angeny Power and Mad Dad make headers with the same style design for significantly cheaper.

The turbo makes a huge difference too. Ever hear a turbo Honda? Pretty nice but not nearly as nice as a Subie.

DON'T LOOSE THE UN-EQUAL LENGTH DP!!!!

Actually, now that I think about it, I did hear a really sick sounding Subie. It was an STi, and I think it didn't have any cats. It was on the dyno (or something) at Super Roopair in Boulder, CO. Wow!! I'd be willing to bet that our cars would sound the same without any cats too.

Turbo Subies with the 2.0L turbo motors can't compare... Our extra .2L stroke makes a lot of noise!!!

Does anyone know if i were to keep the stock downpipe, stock headers, and install the exhaust (listed and linked in first post) ontop of everything else.... would it sound stupid....

(i know i could just get it installed, and see if its lame, but 60 bucks to get it welded and such, i dont want to spend, if its lame, ya dig?)

i'l have stock downpipe and a 3" clean pipe to the back on my 2.0 turbo, and i sounds WERY powerfull and YES et got the real subaru sound...

The reason for the infamous boxer rumble is unequal length headers. All the turbo cars have unequal length headers, and thus why they retain the sound when you make modifications to the turbo-back exhaust.

I am personally fond of the stealth-back approach on the turbo cars. What this is composed of is a nice big downpipe (also the source of greatest HP gains when altering the turbo's exhaust) with a custom mid-pipe (with or without cat, though I prefer them since it's TOO loud without a cat) and the stock muffler/silencer. I love the twin tips.

On the 2.5RS what most likely happened is your friend purchased an EL header. This is the route to greatest performance, but carries a sound penalty. When I first put the Cobb EL headers on my RS, I did find it a bit tinny and if you like, Hondaish. But all that changed when I added some cams (and later headwork). Not once since the installation of the cams has anyone ever poo poo'd the sound my RS makes. It screams like a banshee out of hell telling people not to fuck with me...

that was an awesome response. my buddy didnt get EL headers though. its a cat-back exhaust (with my understanding of a cat-back exhaust being defined as a pipe bolting to the cat, and having a muffler with tips on the end.)

if the EVO exhaust or whatever it is...greddy exhaust i have in the garage would AMPLIFY the sound from the boxer rumble, that'd be awesome. i just have it, so i'd like to use it if i could. if not maybe down the road, i'll get a bigger downpipe, and stuff.

i just want loud boxer rumble. for not much $$.... free greddy muffler sounds like a plan... except if it turns my subaru into a honda. if so, i'll leave stock.

i would like to revive this thread just because my friend (with the 2.5rs) just got stromung exhaust, and since i can smoke him with my wagon, i gotta sound better too any new ideas??

ok how about....

...... trying to see if the muffler fits? im about to just lift the rear of the wagon, and see if i can just remove the pipe+muffler, and bolt on the greddy exhaust in the garage. ive just read so many conflicting things about it fitting....

....again, a 2000 2.5 bolt on cat back exhaust.... on my 92 TW (touring wagon)

my friend has a 2.5 rs, Borla unequal headers and a QTP cutout, the sickest sound ripping through forest roads...that said once my QTP cutout arrives and i throw it on the end of my new 3" bellmouth all bets are off on who will have the sicker sound.

I just finished getting my Bosal twintip catback installed on my 93 SS. Sounds figgen amazing w/ plenty of low troughty box rumble. I have it mated to a Meghan racing 3" bellmouth though im thinking of going divorced. Running stock heads/up-pipe, defiantly an appreciable increase in power/response. Though any aftermarket catback will require an extension pipe of some kind. See my thread in this section.
