No, I've never tried the cocktail.

At this point, I'm basically convinced that each person's individual situation will dictate which oil to use.

Some people still swear by Redline, even though it didn't work for me. Some people (like Vikash) blew up a tranny with GL4 oil, while I've run GL4 several times with no ill effects.

Maybe it's because my transmission has more miles on it, maybe there's something in the shot-peened metal in the Turbo trannies that is more receptive to one oil over another...

The best suggestion I can make at this point is to just try different oils and see what works best. I do however recommend AGAINST using GL4. Like I said, I glanced at a memo written to my manager that Subaru no longer recommended using GM Synchromesh and would NOT honor any more warranty claims with it.

After paging through Uncle Scotty's posting, I found something quite interesting about old cars and the coctail.

One guy wrote:

I read through the posts here and thought I'd swap my gearbox oil. I had in some heavy weight stuff when I ran the car in the CA heat. Here in MA all was well until the cold set in. The second gear has always crunched since I fitted the 100,000 box in. Now the crunching is worse in the cold weather. So I thought surely changing the oil can't fix it??? well it's strange because I swapped the oil for Coastal 75/90 blend yesterday and for the first time today I changed into second with no crunch! I'm not convinced yet but I've never had this happen so time will tell. Strange oil can make such a difference.

Well after since changing the oil the box is like new! I read the posts and thought yeah right! but I can't believe just changing the oil could make such a difference. Now I'm a happy camper as I don't have swap the box.

so is nobody using the BG synromesh tranny fluid?

Im about to change the fluid in the 94 subie, Tranny and rear diff (3.9) how much does the rear hold?
