A/T to M/T Crossmember confusion

Post by wind chaser »

I am trying to assemble the pieces necessary for an A/T to M/T swap in my T wagon. I can't seem to find the answer to this question here or from the local Subie dealerships:

Is the trans crossmember specific to:
1) turbo vs non turbo
2) 5mt vs 4eat
3) turbo auto vs turbo mt

in other words do I need to get any bc/bf 5mt crossmember, or a 5mt turbo crossmember, or does my 4eat turbo crossmember work for the 5mt?
I used to be full, but I'm finally MT !!

The engine crossmember is either turbo or NA, theres no 5mt/4EAT difference, but the trans mount is different.

I have a spare 5MT trans mount from a WRX (someone confirm that fits?) that I could sell you if you need it

He's talking about the trans crossmember. They are definitely different from MT/AT.

Yes, the WRX MT trans mount will work.

I got my transmission crossmember from a later-90s Impreza, so any AWD 5MT setup should work just fine.

afaik the different crossmembers are just 5mt and 4eat, and perhaps the fwd's are different but who cares about that.

The mounts are different for FWD models, but the crossmembers are the same for all 5MT models......same goes for AT models.

Thanks for the help.
I pulled the trans, pedal assembly, clutch cable, speedo cable, cross member with a mount out of a 97 outback sport. I didn't know my A/T driveline was too short until I was paying for the parts. I didn't have the time to go back out and pull one of the two available, but I went back out the following day and they were both pulled. What a bite. I found one at another DIY yard today.

Splinter how much would you want for the WRX trans mount? Is it better than the outback sport one I got with the cross member? The one I got seems to be in good shape.

hey wind chaser how did your swap go, I am doing pretty much the same thing. I have my old '97 Outback sport I'm using as the donor, any snags you ran into? What clutch and flywheel did you use? also how hard was wiring the whole thing up? Any info would be great, I should start pulling the 4eat out this week sometime, I can't wait to get done!
Just because my car looks a little beat up doesn't mean its fast.

The swap is still in a pile in my garage. The guy that was going to actually do the swap has been busy, so ..... I could do it, but my major deterents are: 1) TIME - to get it all done and not leave stuff hacked together just to get it back on the road instead of done right. and 2) I don't want to always be second guessing every little noise or problem as something I screwed up in the process.

I have a heavy duty clutch from GRIP-FORCE (on ebay) and a forester flywheel. I have a slave cylinder etc. so I could convert to hydraulic at some future date if I chose. For now I am going to leave it cable. The mechanical swap seems to me the easier part. It's the electrical that will be more of a challenge. The previous owner had a Subaru factory alarm put in which has made the spagetti under the dash a pain to get to the ecu.

I am about ready to do it myself though, because I am getting impatient.

A long story to say HOPEFULLY SOON!!
