What transmissions are you 16g+ guys running?
Trying to get an idea of what power/tranny/driving style combos are working for people...

I'm running a jdm 4.11 tranny now, its held up for about a year and some change, i ran a t-leg case and 97 impreza gears before that and it held up for about 6 months then 2nd gear blew, and before that it was an automatic which i stripped the pinion shaft teeth off of.

I had one of those two, but I sold it before putting it in. I'm not gonna have near that btw...I'll prolly set it @ 10 psi to be really safe (12-14 on very rare occasion).
You said you used up most of your extra trannies...have any left you are looking to sell?
I didn't hurt anything at 22 psi on a VF39. The trannies aren't super weak, but they do have a limit. At 12-15 psi a 16g is just starting to come to life and I wouldn't expect to blow any trannies with that kind of power...unless you break it launching it.

Shemoves-The tranny (OEM SS) that's currently in your car came from Innovative Tuning.
I had it in about 5-6 months before it sheared 1st.
Tranny before that was the OEM SS tranny and it lasted about 6 months w/ the 16G also...
I'd stick in either a MY03+ WRX tranny (beefier 2nd gear) or a JDM STI 5mt.

If you do decide the WRX route, folklore on NASIOC says that 05 is the best of all since it's got the beefier gears and better syncros.legacy92ej22t wrote:

06+ is worse since it's got the 3.70 gearing which puts more stress on the drivetrain.

No launches or hard shifting. Just normal wear and tear on the one currently in the car. It let go while turning a corner in the city doing maybe 10 mph, off boost.shemoves wrote:Matt, did you do a lot of launches or hard shifts on it? Hey, congrats on the new Legacy
My OEM tranny got launched a few times when I raced the car but nothing too squirlee. It blew 2nd when I rolled on boost, had my kid in the car and everything. I wasn't driving it hard at all.

4.11 tranny and rear diff Deadbolt TDO5-16G FOR THE MOTHER FUCKIN WIN!......your right about the gears being short, my car tops out at 135..not cause of loss of power..but because of the 5th gear rev limit lol. 

92 ss 275k+mi, kartboy shifter/bushings, gauges. VRG3 FCD II, NGK I'4s, TDO5-16G 4" dp CAT-less 3"tbe 4.11 gears.
If I were to drop the 16g down to 9 psi (IIRC, that is what you said the lowest the BC would allow), how long do you think a stock replacement tranny would last driving normally (good shifts, but not afraid to down shift to pass on the freeway or give it some 'go' from a slow roll)?legacy92ej22t wrote:No launches or hard shifting. Once again I will chime in on the reliability of the NA tranny I am using. 350-400 torque, about 36 drag launches on this power so far, running an unsprung six puck. And plenty of on-ramp tuning sessions.....

I ran the OEM tranny, followed by a PPG straight cut synchro box (RWD), and then a dogbox.
The owner after me ran a stock WRX tranny (RWD), followed by a different dogbox, and then back to a stock WRX tranny (AWD).
The dogbox was, by far, my favorite.
As for which WRX tranny is the strongest? They all suck, truthfully. RA gears aren't really much stronger than stock WRX gears (I can explain, if necessary). Not strong enough to warrant the install money and time.
The only "strong" stock Subaru tranny is the 6-speed, and even they pop.

other than the synchros wearing out in my NA 4.11 91 tranny, it's doing great on the track and on the street, granted I'm not boosting yet, but abuse is abuse.

I've been running a stock 5spd tranny for a about a year with a vf8 running 15psi of boost without issue.
I really think it is just the draw. Before this was running a stock tranny with 210k miles on it. No problems other than synchros were going out. The current tranny has maybe 70k miles on it.
I don't drop the clutch though. Most of my starts are rolling starts from the lights and I'll munch it once I'm rolling. I have a stage 1 excedy clutch currently for a wrx, so nothing exception, but better than stock.
