Yup. Our subaru motors are big in the aero industry. The flat engine's center of gravity works great for those folks. Its not everyday you see a EA82 in an aircraft, like that picture there... usually its the EA81 you see because they have no timing belt the chance of failure is alot less likely.

They also use EJ22's alot as well.

That's how I found my way to the Subarus. I was researching for a suitable alternative powerplant for an experimental airplane.

Check this one out, EJ22 all the way to STi.

Almost any car engine is much better than the aircraft industry junk designed decades ago that cost an exorbitant amount of money and still have failures that would be unacceptible in any automotive engine that they instal in small piston aircraft. The Subarus are popular because they are the, basically, the only boxer - the same configuration as the aircraft OEMs - and light weight. It's not so much the CG of the boxer, but the roll center and excellent packaging (much more appropriate than in a car). It's the closest thing to a radial in that regard, and probably the most logical replacement in the evolution of the small piston aircraft.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
