Mysterious hoses on tranny

Post by grippingdrifting »

I was working on my car today and happened to notice two disconnected hoses coming off the tranny (auto). The ends look nice and clean but I couldn't find any sort of connector anywhere near. It almost seems that the hoses should connect together but it's hard to say. I checked my other car (manual) but didn't notice anything so I think it's specific to autos. Has anyone else noticed this or know what they are for?

Hi, mine has that too, well at least one, that I know of  I guess, it must be a vent or something. I've already put over 220k miles on it, and it's still going strong.

do they head towards the engine bay? if so they are the trans cooler lines. the cooler is on the side of the radiator and is integrated with it.

You'll want those hoses hooked up, they also go to the external trans fluid filter in addition to the radiator.

I checked and hoses are connected to the radiator and fluid filter. The disconnected hoses are near the firewall and attach to the top of the tranny. They are bundled together with a zip-tie and the open ends are located underneath the ignitor/ignition module (the thing with a 5-pin connector in the center near the windshield). The hoses are less than a foot, maybe 8-10 inches long.

They don't have any marks as if a hose clamp was once there? Don't worry about those then.

They're small diameter hoses correct....maybe 1/8" dia. ?

Are they the ones in this pic?

If so, they're vent lines and need to be left open.
