question about 5MT swap

ive been wanting to do the swap for a long time and ive read both write-ups a few times over to get an idea of what id be getting into, none of it sounds terrably complicated, just time consuming, so this summer i want to do it for real
so in about a month when school is out for summer and me and some budies have time to hunt through junkyards
im going to begin stock piling parts for the 5MT swap

so the main question is, do i need the same year tranny and parts, or is like a 04' the same as a 90'
is it the best idea just to go ahead and buy the whole donor car from a junkyard, or is it just a well if i strip it out in the junkyard since im limited on space for another car
also, how many miles is to many for a 5MT?

is there anything else i need to know before i put money on something?

prob easier to get a donor car so all the parts are there but that can be more expensive.... milage wise, like you would expect, lower is better but depending on the power you wanna put down(if that is your intentions) then i would research the different types of ej series trannies (power ratings and gear ratios) that are avalible to you in your price range and look for the one with the lowest miles. Basically for the most part you wanna match the clutch and flywheel so say you want to run a clutch for a wrx... well then you need the corresponding flywheel for a wrx... legacy to legacy, and impreza to impreza. what tranny goes into it doesnt make that much of a difference as long as the clutch and flywheel match BUT pay attention to the difference between push and pull type clutch setups as they tranny case is different for both so choose the right type of clutch accordingly. The swap itself isnt hard just make sure you check and triple check yourself on your wiring so you get it right the first time... The wiring is scary for a lot of people that havent messed with wiring before.. but once you understand how to read the diagrams and can understand what they are showing it turns pretty simple. Familarizing yourself with the writeups front to back will help as well. The swap is well worth it and im glad i did it to my old turbo wagon . I hope this helps ya.

so how do i know if it is pull or push?

the wiring didnt look to complicated, ill probably hold off on getting cruise control back, it never worked before so im used to driving without it, i geuss it needs a new cc computer

from what i understand the pull style clutch is hydrloic and easier to find aftermarket flywheels and clutches for while the push style is cable opperated and there are no aftermarket clutchs and flywheels specificly for the legacy with this style clutch but from what i have heard is that you can use parts from a n/a impreza 2.5rs

Pull style is from pre-05(?) turbos. For the USA this means Legacy SS, WRX, Baja turbo and Forester Turbo. I beleive that the NEW Legacy turbos have the new style clutch. All are hydraulic.

Not to familier with the push style, but I know that they can be had in both cable and hydraulic.

If the slave cylinder is mounted behind (trans side) the clutch fork it is a pull style turbo transmission.

If the slave cylinder is mounted on the engine side of the clutch fork it is a push syle and is a N/A trans.

Both kinds have many options for flywheels and clutches. If you end up with a turbo pull style, look for WRX upgrades. If you end up with a Push style transmission looks for upgrade intended for a 2.5RS.

If you keep the flywheel and clutch set all intended for the same car, you chould be good to go. (For example....Order a flywheel and clutch kit for a 2.5RS, don't order a Legacy flywheel and a RS clutch kit unless you know it will work beforehand)
