I was looking around on nabisco and found a guy in ohio with a 98 GT 5speed and rear diff for 400 bucks. They have hydro clutches so it should fit, right? I did some searching and saw some guys go with JDM trannies with 4.11's but haven't seen anything about swapping to a newer US leg tranny. Here's what the guy said:
5-speed Transmission with 4.11 Non-LSD R160 Rear Diff. All shift linkage, knob and the whatnot are included. It worked fine except for difficulty into reverse (a little grind sometimes) in on startups the cold. Probably needs new clutch and had a squeaky throwout bearing. $400+shipping.
Any thoughts?
98 GT tranny and diff for my SS, good idea?

It doesn't matter clutch type. As long as they're both hydraulic.
You'd need the push slave cylinder....and possibly the push master cylinder, but that is an easy swap....and chances are the pull MC will work with the push slave cylinder.

Would the 98 GT flywheel bolt onto our EJ22?
Yessir...all of the EJ flywheels are the same bolt pattern

There are a couple different bore MC's, and different resevoirs. You may affect the clutch feel/effort, but it should still work.AWD_addict wrote:The master cylinders may be interchangeable, but there are a couple different types. Maybe just the fluid tank is different?
The slave cylinders look different.

Well the GT 5sp goes into an old Legacy. Good idea? I don't know, buying a 5sp in the first place would have been a better idea.
The clutch slave cylinders are different enough between push and pull styles that I recommend getting the correct one for the transmission/clutch. The push style slave mounts on top of the bellhousing horizontally, so it'd suck to try to get the pull style slave on there and working. It's just all kinds of wrong.
Master cylinder types would probably just affect pedal feel, like Josh mentioned.
