Sad day my friends...

Post by boro »

I have spent the last two months or so collecting parts to "repair" the Legacy.

After a few hundred dollars and about 20+ hours of work including:

-Intake manifold gaskets
-Catch can installation
-MAP solenoid replacement
-PCV system revamp

I start it up for the first time. I made sure I had oil, coolant, put in some Lucas, intercooler was free of leaks and BOV is oiled...

crank...crank...crank...fires...runs smooth...idle climbs...and climbs...and climbs 2000 now...and climbs..and climbs... 3000...and climbs....sounds good and strong but still climbing...climbing...bam! idles at 4000 rpm!!! gurggle gurggle gurggle...foam spitting out of the coolant resavoir....smoke pouring out of the left cylander head...misfiring...milky oil...yeah...dead. It'll hold stable at 4000, but it's toasted.

I am pretty depressed now. Any body have an engine for sale?

The oil is basically white with foamy coolant and there is smoke pouring out of the heads.

Bad head or head gasket - not the end of the world..... Just a lot of labor :-)

If its a bad head, then you obviously need new heads... That would probably cost you $600 total for the whole job.

A headgasket *should* only cost you $150.

I wonder what is causing the 4000 rpm idle though. Nothing was lef tout. The only thing wrong is the canister purge solenoid has a boken nipple. It has been cracked for some time and never has it done this.

Code 49, improper MAF and code 42, idle switch improper signal.
I guess that could be the high idle.

Now to find some heads...
