I just got done swapping in a 5-speed from another '91 Legacy turbo.
Everything seems to be in order until I hit 3rd gear, and it isn't there. No grinding or anything. It just isn't there.
I had JUST replaced the gear oil, and there was nothing out of the ordinary in it. Just the normal amount of gunk on the drain plug.
Any ideas? I am going to the dragon this weekend, so anything will have to wait until afterwards. Anyone know about how much 3rd gear runs?
Well, this kinda sucks....... (5-speed swap woes)

If 1, 2, 4 & 5 work, that's weird...
Could it be the shift linkage?

I don't think so.
The linkage is hooked up correctly, and wasn't damaged any.
I'm gonna try a few things to see what happens.

Okay.
The linkage wasn't hooked up 100% correctly. I had the shift lever pointing the wrong direction.
Got that sorted out, though, and I still don't have 3rd gear.

How do you have the shift linkage hooked up?

Now I have the linkage hooked up exactly like stock.
I replaced some of the bushings, and I initially had the shift lever on backwards (bend pointing back instead of forward).
It is just dead where 3rd should be. you know how going into any gear, you get 2 clicks? A dull one followed by a sharper one? That's about the best I can describe it. You probably only notice it when you shift really slow.
Anyway, going to 3rd, I only feel the dull initial click. No sharper click.

Well, I found out why 3rd was gone.
The drive gear on the main shaft had moved up the shaft to the point where it was touching second gear, which is part of the shaft. This meant that it would no longer turn. This meant the next time third was engaged, the hub the synchro locks onto broke free of the gear and was spinning free.
Found this out when I grenaded second.
Now an '06 WRX tranny and rear end are going in.......
