My tranny finally gave up the ghost.

Post by douglas vincent »

I was in 4th gear, 15 psi, and let up on the gas.....

Weird sound starts, but since I had removed the supercharger and now had a long pipe from the turbo to the front mount, it sounded like the pipe was rythmically banging, not loud though.

Get off the freeway. bang bang bang bang... OK, somethings wrong. Am able to get about 5-6 blocks, through 2 intersections, and then pull over. Hmmmmm , nothing but 1st gear.... I am about 35 blocks from the shop.

1st gear to the shop! tranny making bad bad sounds. Cant shift out of 1st....

Get to the shop, and at real low speeds, the tranny binds really really bad and then disengages with a BANG!

Get it into reverse and back it in.

Pulled the motor and clutch looks perfect... crap.

I stuck the tranny in first gear.... Spin the front tire..... tranny shaft doesnt move.... When I put the tranny in nuetral, I am able to spin the shaft by hand, and NO bad noises are bad catches...

I hope its the front diff because I have two extra....

Good luck with it, I've been having bad luck with transmissions. Seems like every tranny I get doesn't last long without destroying the input shaft seal. Usually leads to locking up the rear bearing on the mainshaft before i notice.

I dont remember a broken shift fork making a bang bang bang noise. One thing i've noticed with broken shift forks is the shifter tends to lock up.

And I just finished telling a bunch of my friends about how much power you were putting through the stock tranny.... lol

It was bound to break eventually.... You can only do so many launches/passes with the power you have on a stock tranny.... Im kind of surprised it lasted this long....

When you take it apart, take some pics for us.... :-D

Depends on the break. It'll make noise like you broke a gear when rolling, but be relatively quiet when your idling. The bang bang noises are from the slider hub bouncing around bouncing off of the engagement teeth. Without the guidance of the shift fork, there is no real significant preload on the collar, and it'll move freely.

Got the tranny out tonight. Kind of a bitch to do by yourself.....

Man, what a dirty dirty dirty tranny! I think I blew at least 3-4 pistons on it, so it was completely coated with oil and dirt!

Took the tranny down to the local spray and wash and blasted the crap out of it. Needless to say, I am a tad dirty.

Back to the shop, and tore it down......

Place your bets folks!!!!

And......

It.....

Was.....

3rd gear! About 20 teeth off of the drive gear and 5-9 teeth off the driven gear..... Lots of gear teeth on the bottome of the case!

The good news?

I kept my old tranny guts which had bad 2nd gear drive and driven.... Which are COMPLETELY separate from 3rd gear... So I am about 95% sure I am able to fix/swap all parts with ZERO out of pocket cost...... fingers crossed!!!!

Interesting....Just think, getting the transmission out by yourself isn't nearly as bad as putting it in by yourself....
