5mt hard to get in gear, warning may be long.

Post by jefferson »

I recently purchased this 91 ss with a 5 spd. It was supposed to have a new clutch in it. My problem is it is extremely hard to get the thing in 1st and reverse. Other gears are notchy, but nothing like the two mentioned.

!st is the worst of the 2, but there are times it goes in ok, you just never know. A friend who is a Subaru tech thinks it is the clutch and I tend to disagree with him. The clutch engages near the top of the travel, not at the bottom where incomplete release would cause dragging and thus trouble getting into gear.

Is it possible for the awd system to get in a bind just driving the car? There are times when you can tell there is something putting tension on the drivetrain as you are shifting, mainly from 1st to 2nd.

I was going to change the tranny fluid today and I was getting the car in position to run up onto some boards and I noticed the car wouldn't roll down a slight incline. I was in reverse with the clutch in and the car wouldn't roll. The tranny was hard to get out of reverse and when it went into neutral the car rolled down the incline. So now I am thinking it could be the clutch. Is there something that could have been done when they put that clutch in that may be causing this problem?

This is the last real problem I am having with the car and if I can get this fixed it will be alot nicer to drive. I am really looking forward to having a normal shifting tranny.

Probably seized shift linkage. Lube everything up good and check the torque on the knuckles

I gave that some thought too and have some kart boy mounts coming. I really think it is something else though. It may have to be a process of elimination. I was going to put in the Amzoil gear lube to see what it would do for the shifting, but then when it wouldn't roll downhill in gear it made me wonder. I am leaning toward a clutch problem or the awd binding somehow.

I put the kartboy shifter mount bushings in and there is a slight improvement, but I think it is from all the force being used to shift is being used for that rather than flexing rubber bushings.

Not much response, doesn't anybody have any advice?
