Tailshaft housing removal tips?

Post by Bosco »

Gonna give it a shot.
I just need a confidence booster here.

Any special tricks to removing & replacing the tailshaft housing / clutchpacks / duty solenoid assembly?

are there any tricky or stubborn pieces in there?

Here's how it goes in my head:
Just move the exhaust, driveshaft, and pitching stopper, drop the rear of the trans, and unbolt the sucker?

Does it slide on and off, or will it just fall right off?

Are there some published FSM scans of the removal/reassembly procedure?
If I can, Id like to avoid any noob-like errors.

Thanks.

Holy crap! That was EASY!

I lucked out! Got the housing off pretty much like I described above. I also removed the engine mounts. I dunno If I needed to or not.

Anyway, The Torque Bind is gone. :-) :) :D :-D

I opened that bad boy up and found that the ground wire tab on the duty C solenoid had broken off, and was not connected to anything!
I fixed that, put it back together, dumped in some transmission fluid, and Viola! AWD works perfectly! No Torque bind, no crazy torque steer, and no more blinking "power" light either.

I was leaping around like a leprechaun I was so happy! I didn't even have to buy anything but some trans fluid. :-D

good job on doing that repair :)
just an fyi, most reputable shops diagnose the torque bind, and recommend a new transmission, about 2000 repair.

when all that is needed is pretty simple.
