Knocking sound from right front

Post by BSOD2600 »

About 1.5 months ago, the right lower ball joint came off, thus causing the car to fall off the joint. Ever since then, I would occasionally hear a slight knocking sound that would come from the front right, typically when turning left. Another time I'd hear this sound would be occasionally when I depress the clutch when coming to a stop. The brakes were just replaced a few weeks ago, so they're not the culprit.

Yesterday I noticed this sound has gotten worse -- now I hear it while driving straight. It's really the most noticeable around 20 mph. I told the girlfriend about it and at first she couldn't hear it. Then she eventually could, and said, "only someone anal about their car would notice that". Yea well thats what people do to keep their cars maintained and running...

Any thoughts on possibly what this new lovely problem could be?

Well I got the axle replaced and the really obvious knocking sound is now gone. Although, some times I swear I hear another lighter tapping sound coming from the right front area.

Also, it seems that when that damn balljoint came off that it ripped the boot for the steering rack, which is now leaking. How expensive/hard is it to change a rack? How long can I keep feeding it fluid until something bad happens?

I just finally changed my rack, after feeding it fluid for 2 years, and it wasn't even fubared yet, it just was nasty and ugly...

Well I take it back, that damn knocking sound is NOT fixed. :(. What else could be causing a knocking/tapping sound at low speeds? Tranny?

Anything that's rotating while the car is moving

wheels tapping something, or tapping the brake dust covers (I've had that before) and anything to do with the drivetrain, from the bearings to the transmission.

I would start with the wheels and bearings, check for rub spots on the inside of the wheels, inspect your bearings and check slack in wheel play.
