is it normal for your exhaust to smell like gas?

my 1991 legacy l wagon awd's exhaust smells like gas... like a lot. is this normal? its pissing me off

better rich then lean :-D

when i changed the coolant temp. sensor the smell was gone, no more hesitation and got better mpg.

I call O2 sensor on this one. O2 sensors usually contribute to rich conditions.
