EJ20G ECU fans...was:Took the plunge

Post by PhyrraM »

Getting close to installing mt EJ20G w/16G. Was getting really worried about engine management.

Well, finally, found a Power FC for a good price. Seems like ever since Apexi put them on the discontinued list the prices started to go up, not down. Ordered a Datalogit to go with it.

Still need a wideband and a laptop. Wideband will be ordered tomorrow, just need to do a bit of research into which one I like. Leaning twords the PLX to start. Mostly because it will integrate with the OLED guages in the future.

Info is a bit hard to find about the Data Logit software. Anybody have any idea what spec I should look for in a used laptop? Pentium 1, 2, 3 or 4? Win98, 2K or XP? Hoping a suitable unit can be had for $2-300.

The Power FC and Stock WRX EJ20G ecus have two cooling fan outputs. One is pin 17 and labled as main fan relay. The other is pin 4 and labled as sub fan relay.

The Legacy has only 1 fan circuit. Which output should I use? Which one comes on first? Is one just for the A/C, which I am keeping?

Apparently the Aussies install WRX ecus without worring about it. Maybe I'm stressing over nothing?

Any insight appreciated.

Main fan is the big one, and is meant for the "cooling" needs of the engine. The sub fan is supposed to be for the AC.

However pretty much all the legacies I've seen have both fans come on for engine cooling

Yes. The box that currently ships with the DataLogit (the 'black box') has eight 0-5 volt inputs that can be data logged with the engine data from the ecu. The PLX has a 0-5 volt wideband output and a 0-1 volt narrowband output. These are in addition to thier own propriatary 'gauge' network.

I actually recieved both the Power FC and the Datalogit in what seemed like record time. Haven't even been able to secure a laptop yet. PLX on the other hand seems to be having trouble shipping promtly. Might cancel them and order a LC-1 if it goes too long.

I powered both the FC and the Datalogit up on the workbench and all seems cool. Haven't had time to examine the map that was in the FC too much, but someone had the redline set to 9000 rpm.

I'm now thinking about the AFM. Do any USDM cars have a comparable AFM to a '93-'96 WRX? Early Legacy JECS perhaps?

Finally got my whole stash assembled.
