It closed( it's from a Legacy Turbo), but cosidering the upgrades
made over the years to the open deck motors, I would venture to say
the new WRX motor( or current) will probably be stronger then the old
closed deck motors anyway. Open deck vs. closed deck matters very
little...UNLESS you are looking at "byron type" horsepower levels.
It's nice to have a closed deck motor, but I wouldn't hesitate to own
turbocharged 2.5 if I could. Having the motor in proper tune(
air/fule ratios among other things) matters much much much more in
terms of reliability, then if it's a closed or open deck block.

It's an EJ22T, so I would assume it's a closed deck.

Byron's Impreza with EJ22T
It looks like he's reversed the hood scoop on his- probably going a long way to lowering the 2.5's terrible drag coefficient (it's close to that of a Ford Explorer). Neat, easy mod for a NA Impreza.
BTW- he's de-badged the grille too, which is what I've done to my 93 legacy turbo. I like the look.

He reversed the hoodscoop because he uses a front mount intercooler,
so the reversed hoodscoop provides a quick and easy exit from the
ultra hot air that would be stuck in the engine compartment, similar
to the Mitsu Lancers, and the new Impreza WRC. Although any help in
"streamlining" the brick-like Imprezas( and Legacys for that matter)
would be a plus I suppose
And just for the record, that car
started out as a '93 1.8 FWD. What's amazing is he( and the former
owner) probably have less money in that car then what a brand new GT
limited would go for today...I'm guessing.

Making good pages can be hard. I spend a lot of time making my

right.

pages, and even though they look simple, it's hard getting them just
right.

I hear ya Dave, I know when I did mine I didn't want it to be another
cheesy webpage. And despite my blue text
most people like the layout
and content...or at least that's what I've been told...
