I'm changing the timing belt on my 90 Legacy. Is there an easy way to
hold the engine in one position while i loosen the crank pulley bolt?
In my old 1985 GL with an EA82, there was a flywheel opening at the
back of the engine where I could easily jam a wrench in to hold the
engine. Is there such an opening on the EJ22?
Thanks for the help!

I haven't done this myself, but since i know there's one on the
2000 Imprezas, i'm pretty sure it's there on yours.

Dave,
i did mine by using a socket on the pulley bolt with a 90 degree solid
extension bar resting on the chassis rail and crank the engine. be sure to
remove spark plugs so engine doesn't start and make sure you are UNDOING the
pulley bolt not tightening it.
rod.

Possible Answer;
Trick I saw in the Imprezza STi-Mlist says to stuff a piece of rope down a
plug hole.
When you turn the pulley bolt, the piston comes up and gently stops jammed
against the rope so you can loosen the bolt without damage to engine. Sounds
OK.

use a small handled 3-4lb hammer and a stout wrench, 2 or 3 hits and
away you go..
