Planning on driving the Touring Wagon but wont start.....
No fuel to filter...
Any of you guys have tips for replacing pump?
Is it in fuel tank?
Can you get at it without taking tank off?
Help if you can.....
Thanks,
Carl

Yes it is in the fuel tank and yes you can get it out without
dropping the tank, but are you positive it's the fuel filter? It
could be the "not-so-reliable" connection under the rear seat going
to the fuel pump. Test at the pump for power while cranking, if you
haven't already. Just a thought.

I looked at that connection and it looks fine. In the morning I will check to see if I have power there. Is the pump on the passenger side or drivers? And how do you get at it?

I think you can access the fuel pump from under the back seat. Under the back seat there MAY be some panels there that you can take off, and the fuel pumps are under there (if those panels exist that is). Has anyone ever swapped they're fuel pump like that?

The fuel pump is in the tank and can be replaced. We removed the rear
seat and the carpet from the trunk and on the pass side there is a
panel close to the front of the trunk that is removable and
gives access to the pump by removing the cover on the tank. The pump
is attached to this cover and can be removed after removing the
screws. You have to turn the unit while lifting it and be careful not
to force things as you could lose the filter off the assy. Before
doing this I would check for 12 volt power at the connector on the
cover these things are usually pretty reliable. If you are thinking
of doing any serious performance mods this would be a good time to
install a higher capacity pump as high boost and high rpm will cause
a lean out due to the pumps limitations.

Matt and Alan,
Thank you very much for your input on the fuel pump replacement. I checked the connectors and the voltage at the pump head and all seemed fine.
My mechanic wanted to take a half day to replace the pump. It took me longer to drive to get it than it did to replace it. Less than 30 minutes from the time I opened the box until I was starting the car. Seems to be fine. I hope this is the end of the intermittant horse power fall off problem I have had.
Again I say thanks to you and the whole group here. I have saved hundreds of dollars in repair labor by belonging to this group.

Fantastic. Glad to hear it worked for you. Just out of curiosity,
what did a new pump for the turbo's go for? I remember an SVX one
being almost $400 or something ridiculous like that.

This was way cheaper than that. Only $297 with the local tax.
It is actually quite a little more sophisticated piece of hardware than I thought it would be. I hadn't taken into consideration that this might have the fuel gauge float on it and a pre filter on the intake end and the rheostat for the fuel gauge.
So anyone out there have any suggestions on the oil leak opened up on this car. Dripping from the passenger side front part of engine. Drips onto the exhaust pipe and shield. I figure it is one of those $2 seals and $200 labor bills.

Glad to hear you fixed it Carl, ...I have heard a theory that one should not
run this style of pump mostly unsubmerged as it shortens their
life...maintaining a full tank of fuel actually cools the pump.
Regular main filter changes also can reduce the load on the pump... where
blocked filters have caused problems in the power connector.
Your oil leak sounds like the cam covers.. you can try nipping up the
bolts... easy enough enough to get to from underneath.

Glad to hear you got the pump in. On the oil leak it does sound like
the valve covers what I did was go to a specialty bolt company and
get some spring washers ( they sort of resemble a potato chip when
viewed from the side) and place one under each valve cover bolt it
doesn't take much to stop the leaks if this is what it is leaking.

Friday PM Blues
Could be a broken CV Boot.
I had this happen and always had a nice burning oil smell after driving for
a while (as it dripped greae/oil on the exhaust).
Cost me (NZD)$55 to get fixed

This was way cheaper than that. Only $297 with the local tax.
It is actually quite a little more sophisticated piece of hardware than
I thought it would be. I hadn't taken into consideration that this
might have the fuel gauge float on it and a pre filter on the intake end
and the rheostat for the fuel gauge.
So anyone out there have any suggestions on the oil leak opened up on
this car. Dripping from the passenger side front part of engine. Drips
onto the exhaust pipe and shield. I figure it is one of those $2 seals
and $200 labor bills.

Friday PM Blues
Upon further inspection oil appears to be coming from the valve cover. I snugged up the bolts there yesterday and we will see what happens. It looks like a guy could change this gasket in his garage. Is there any trick I should know before I try????
Probably not going anywhere today.... 8" of snow and -40f windchill here in beautiful Omaha, Nebraska USA

Friday PM Blues
- Buy the cam cover gasket, 2 gaskets for the sparkplug holes, 6 seals for
the bolts.
- Remove the sparkplugs, cam cover
- Clean off and redo the silicon gasket seal in the corners, and camplug
areas (where the factory did it)
- Be patient and a little bit of a contortionist
