Sunroof and power window blues

Post by William D. Robinson »

I would love to see detailed instructions on sunroof drainage tube unblocking and any sunroof maintenance tips anyone could provide. My sunroof always opens just fine, but sometimes it refuses to acknowledge it when I push the CLOSE button. I replaced the switch, but it made no difference. I suspect that there is a relay somewhere, but I don't know where. Also, sometimes my drivers window is really sluggish about going up. Any tips would be geatly appreciated.

ps. Spokane has about eight inches of snow and the roads are icy. I have brand new Michelin Arctic Alpin studless tires and I am in Heaven!!!!. Last weekend I was severely reprimanded by a young cop for horsing around in the snow and I loved my scolding even more than the driving. Out of the half million cars in my county, I'm absolutely certain that mine is the hottest under the current weather conditions.

Bill,
I enjoyed some donuts and four wheel drifts in the ice storm we got
here in Texas! No police scoldings, but the Wal Mart security golf
cart made an attempt to intercept me. :) The sunroof relay you speak
of is behind the dash, to the left and slightly below the leftmost
vent in the dash. It is red, and adjacent to a neutral colored
blower relay, and below a brown colored ignition relay and green
colored fuel pump relay. This info comes from my 91 service manual,
so I do not know if it applies to your car, or how accessible it
really is. There is also a sunroof control module in the roof behind
the sunroof. Hope this helps.

Justin

My sunroof sweat a tad, probably a new weather strip around the hole would stop it, at least it did for my buddies VW Passet. I havn't done the strip yet but i will when the leak gets regular, i guess. sounds like its just a matter of time. The plumbing on a sedan runs down the rear left side inside the trunk into the well where the jack is and from there out side.

as for the not closing problem, there isn't anything in the haynes wiring diags about s sun roof or its controls, but . . . . i would assume ( i hate that word) ;-) that a relay in not the problem, there is probably a limit switch to stop it at the end and reset things to go the other way, maybe its that, if i had a wiring diagram it would be fun to figure it out.

Gord,
I tried to buy a seal for mine. Dealer says you have to buy the whole
glass piece with seal attached! Figures.

I was at the same case before, I bring my car for re-seal with
silicon, it cost $200 for it! 2 year later the roof leak again, this
time the dealer told me that this is the seal on the glass is
leaking, so I have to raplace the whole glass and with the whole roof
re-seal and installation, it cost $400 with the used roof glass, now
my glass not blue anymore (the stock sunroof glass was tinted blue,
now its the same color as the 2.5GT, little orange color) and now it
didn't leak anymore!!
BTW, I ask for my other Legacy (99 2.5GT) and the dealer person told
me it improved the design so it never leak (he sure it to me)!!!
