Just thought I would take a second to introduce myself before I ask
any questions of the group. I am a 30yr old male living in Calgary
Alberta. I own a '91 Legacy turbo AWD with automatic transmission :(.
Well, sad face only for the tranny part. The car has 350000km on it.
Since winter has come on I have been experiencing horrible gas
mileage in the 300km/tank range. Sure I'm a heavy foot but normally
mileage was at least 400km/tank city and 500-550 highway. Anyone have
any input on this or things to check. I was thinking O2 sensor, PCV
valve or something in that area. I'm currently changing the struts
and went with KYB GR2's. I believe the struts that I removed were
originals but I'm not sure. I'll have to look at the service records
to confirm this. When I reassembled the struts I discovered that my
springs also need to be changed (I was able to compress the springs
and assemble the struts without the use of a strut compressor!).
Anyways my biggest concern at the moment is the mileage. Once I get
that sorted out I can worry about adding power. Thanks in advance for
any help.

Sean

Hi Sean, I experienced the exact same thing.I live in St Paul MN and when
winter came my gas milage dropped from 20-21 to 15-17 MPG.I had also
installed a manual boost controller at the same time, and I thought maybe
that was the culprit but now I am not so sure.I did get a code for the
pressure sensor and pressure exchange solenoid, but both checked out per
factory service manual specs. The next step is to check the wiring from ECU
to the pressure sensor and solenoid, but it is to cold outside even in my
garage.(outside temps have been below 0F).I am anxious to see if anyone else
has any ideas. BillC

Sean-welcome to the group! Here are some basic suggestions to improve your
mileage; 1st-try changing you O2 sensor; they`re only good for about 50k
miles-check your plugs & wires-plugs should be changed every 30k miles &
wires usually every 100k miles or if you have any carbon-tracked plugs-try
8-8.5 mm Magnecor or NGK wires. Do you have the original coil pack? If so,
upgrade to the late RS pack from a 2.5 Impreza (almost a 50% increase in
potential spark). Try a K&N Filtercharger as a replacement for the paper
element-you`ll notice a difference. If you`re bucks-up, get an MSD Dis-2
unit as an addition to your ignition-it`s a capacitive-discharge unit that
will increase spark & mileage (I`m saving for one now). Lastly, make sure
(if you have them) your cats are`nt restricted as that will definitely
affect mileage. Don`t know about very cold weather affecting your mpg, but I
would`nt be surprised. Good luck from ROD (somewhere in Arizona)
