Tranny replacement.

Post by Spitfire999 »

Hello everyone...

Now I am sure that I am beating a dead horse here, but I just need a definite answer and I can not find one. I have a 1991 Legacy Sport with a 4eat. As the title suggests I need to replace the transmission. It is hard to come across one from a Legacy sport so can I use one of the Legacy L transmissions. Are they still 3.9 just like the sport? If not, would it be possible to simply install say a different tranny and just use a corresponding dif?

Hopefully I won't be burned alive for bringing this up, but I would really appreciate a clean cut answer. Thank you very much everyone. :-D

Are we talking a direct automatic replacement or an auto to manual swap?

Direct automatic. I have heard that some 92-94 NA 4EAT use the same tranny, not sure tho.

the trannys are the exact same, the flex plate and torque converter are bigger on the turbo. so i just make sure you use the torque converter and flex plate off the turbo together, or off the N/A together. those are the only difference
i found this out the hard way

Excellent, thats just the answer I was looking for. Will I need a different TCU (I have heard this mentioned?). Also, what price would someone be expecting to pay for a legacy L tranny. The places round me are asking 400 for a used one which seems insanely steep, considering I could buy (and sold one for) around 200-250. Are they throwing me for a ride or are they really that much? Thanks a bunch. :D
