Experienced fuel cut w/o mods?

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

Experienced fuel cut w/o mods?

Post by BSOD2600 »

My TW is stock in terms of power production; no FCD, boost controller, IC, etc; only the 4.11 manual tranny. What exactly does fuel cut feel like, since I think it might have happened to me the other day...

I was in pretty close to WOT in 3rd, while I was cruising around a cloverleaf on-ramp to an Interstate (exact picture here). Anyways, after the leaf straightened out, I pushed it into 4th and continued WOT. Right after the overpass (where I've marked the destination on the map), the car suddenly lost power (and not like I've experienced in the past when I was missing spark). There was an obvious lack of acceleration, so I let my foot off the gas a little and then the power came back. I mashed it to the floor, got power for a brief second and then lost it. Off the gas once again and didn't floor it anymore as I continued to merge onto the interstate.

I've went WOT many times before and after this incident and have never had this type of power loss. I recall the boost gage was showing around 7-8 psi the whole time too.

Is it possible I'm experiencing fuel cut or do I have some other sort of major missing problem again?

If the gauge was reading 7-8, then I would be guessing that you were not experiencing fuel cut.

Fuel cut to me feels like the car hits a wall of intense wind. It is not a huge drop, but it is not small either.

If you do not have any codes, then it could be any number of things.

any clutch issues?

Hmm, well I did it again on another left handed clover leaf (seen here. Basically was doing 3/4 throttle around the corner, just before my crappy tires loose their grip. Once it straightened out, WOT. This time when the cut happened, I kept my foot on the floor for a good 2-3 seconds. The car felt like it was coasting. Let up the gas for a second and then half throttle, and its back working again.

I did only have 1/4 tank of gas left (yes, my gage is still fairly accurate), so maybe the centripetal force was throwing the gas away from the pump? I filled the tank up tonight, so I'll see if I can replicate again in the next few days. I've already replaced the fuel filter several months ago.

No, no codes have been thrown at all. The clutch should be fairly new, with the 5MT swap that was done ~9K ago. The only clutch "issues" are basically if I'm accelerating and then suddenly release the gas, the car sort of lurches/jerks a bit some times -- that normal?

Sadly, that is normal.
With my mods, if i jump on it then let off, it bucks wild sometimes.

It could have been fuel starvation, but that is really bad in a turbo car.

How much fuel did you have in your tank at these times?
Seems like it is doing it when cornering...maybe the fuel gets pushed to the side and cannot enter the fuel line?

Just a guess

Really? This recent thread has a guy saying it runs worse now.

If the problem is a centifical force issue, how would a different pump help when there is low fuel? It have a better ability to pump the fuel between the two tanks or something under more G's?
