91 Legacy Turbo suspension recomendations

I am looking for springs and struts for my 1991 Legacy Turbo Sedan. I want something that performs very well but is not as stiff as coilovers.

I am looking for 1.5" or more of lowering.

Searching areound I noticed that maybe the 91 is not compatible with other models.

Please give me some suggestions....pics of examples would be great.

Let me clarify a little for more focused feedback...

I was thinking moer in the 1.4" - 1.8" drop....

I had a bad experience on my 98 wagon, where I got the whiteline springs 1" drop, with KYB AGX....what happened was the back lowered but not the front. Turns out that only in the front, the KYB AGX had a 1/2" higher spring perch height then my stock 98 L wagon strut.

Since subies kind of sit lower in the rear to begin with....my car was akward.

So I am very skeptical of AGX's and GR 2....

I justy need to be assured of the actual results....pleas help

ground control sleeves with AGXs?

that gives you height adjustment and rebound adjustment. However at that price you're nearing the budget coilovers.

Personally, If I were to go the coilover route, I wouldn't get anything less than an RCE T2. The cheap coilovers have junk dampers and that's the most important part of a setup. It's still something to consider, though, as some people seem to like them.

Do the ground control sleeves include springs....if not, what would you recommend with that set up?

that's what they are. It's a threaded shaft with a collar and a spring. You take off your spring, put the threaded shaft over the strut, and then you have a threaded, movable spring perch like on a coilover. They're standard 2.5" diameter springs made by eibach, so you can get them in whatever rate and length you want.

I checked for trhe Ground Controls....and I can't find anyone who listd them for a 90-91 Legacy.

Could you point me in the right direction?

They don't make the AGX specifically for a 91 Legacy either. You'll need to go all 93-01 Impreza stuff. At the very most it will require you to also get some 92-94 Legacy/93-01 Impreza rear top hats. I think I have some old ones with 130k sitting around, or you can get group N tops for like $120.

Actually I think the fitment is the same between all subarus. You would need to contact a vendor to see how the spring rates and lengths differ and ask them what would be best with AGXes on a 1st gen legacy or impreza. I see them on e-bay but I'm not sure what other companies stock them. There are people here and on nasioc with them, so I'm sure if you searched for ground control you could find more info.

Are there any other good otpions for struts other then KYB?

I need to know 100% that spring perches are at the same height between the stock struts and AGX's....so I don't get shafted again

well, that's the thing with going to ground control sleeves. it doesn't matter where the spring perches are because you're not using them.

Since the chassis is the pretty much the same same, and just the springs are different lengths and shapes on your 91, you can switch to an entire 93-01 Impreza setup and not have any issues.

90-91 = tapered rear springs
92-94 = not tapered rear springs
93-01 impreza = not tapered rear springs

the 90-91 front springs are taller, and the perch is lower on those struts. Everything else should be the same.


I don't know anything about the H&Rs. Tokico D-specs are an adjustable strut better than the AGX but some people are having difficulty finding them.
