First mod for stock 91 turbo sedan

Post by macipusy »

I was researching my first mods and after a new suspension I was thinking of a MBS and a boost gauge.

What would be a max safe boost with just those mods, what about if I add a WRX TMIC?

Thanks

im running 10psi with no intercooler and does just fine. but ive had it higher like to 15psi still with no intercooler but with 93 oct gas nothin lower. and with a boost cut defender. you'll hit boost cut at 12.75 psi.

12psi is good on a wrx topmount till you can get a boost cut defender but no higher because you'll be pushing the stock turbo past its capability.
plus you'll be maxing you stock injectors at 15psi too.

Dang, I used to hit boost cut @ 11psi here in NYC.
If I had set boost to 10.5 psi & did a WOT run I'd hit boost cut by the 4eat's 2-3 shift. I could not set boost to 11psi w/o hitting boost cut - ? lower alt.

First $100 - I'd get a drop in high flow air filter ($35-55), a VDO 20/25 boost gauge ($25), & an Ebay MBC ($22).

I dislike TMICs, but I may add in or replace the air filter with one of Blackbart's SAAB i/cs for $35 if 12 psi is your goal - it can't hurt & its almost free + Blackbart is a good guy!!!

at some point you'll want to look at an exhaust to open things up.

Suspension, tires/wheels, then power.

That's my opinion.

Make it stop, make it turn, then make it fast. There are a ton of free/nearly free mods you can do that are fun and get your hands dirty and in your engine bay if thats what you are looking for. Do a search for "cofee mug mod", "de-snorkle", and the "big 3 upgrade" (or "grounding mod). Thoes three should take a few weekends, give you a better daily drive and make your turbo/intake sounds louder which is always a bonus. :)

Then like DLC said, get yourself a nice set of tires, do some work on your suspension, make sure your breaks are all 100% (or even upgrade them), then worry about making more power. Hell, you might even find that your legacy is fast enough for your present driving skill (I know I did).

yes, upgrading the handling and brakes is very smart. it will help you from losing control of the car or hitting some one elts. and these cars with stock suspension are really sluggish. my car is getting to quick for the stock brakes and suspension. those are next on my list. faster is int all ways better.

Trust me...the suspension was ordered before I was even holding the title.....

Ive owned a 98 BG for 8 years and I know all that you are saying from experience...

but the SS is my first turbo car, so when it comes to FI engines I'm a noob...

Lets just keep going on the engine mods and what order they should come

Thanks

Walbro fuel pump- Suggested for any turbo car
Grounding wires, better wires, ignitor and plugs
Intercooler- as the original engine had none.
Better exhaust- as this frees up room for later mods also.
Maybe the coffee cup mod and a better filter.
MBC- after having an intercooler and exhaust- a few more pounds is good.
Yes I have too many Subarus
No you can't have one

The Diamond coilpack has a stronger kick then the Hitachi. This gives a stronger spark and better ignition.
