Damage from timing belt being out?

Post by bny82 »

Hey guys how would a new timing belt jump 5-6 teeth on the LH head and will that have caused any damage to the valves? head gasket is dead on that side too lol.
Cheers.

Single overhead cams right? if you have dohc then yes they could be damaged, but if sohc they are fine.

could be old worn out tensioner, or could have been installed improperly.....

the tensioners are expensive.

I'll test the tensioner the belt was still very tight. I didn't fit the belt. I bought the car cheap with the problem.

This just happened to my friends legacy. His skipped because the rubber dust seal on the plastic timing cover behind the cam gear came off and got in between the belt and the gear.
If that was was what happened in your case you'd probably notice cunks of torn seal inside the covers.

this a great post that has wonderful links on how to change a t-belt...

The tensioner is a tricky part, if you compress it in a vice, you have to do it very slowly- taking 3 minutes, or you will destroy the piston.

I"m not sure if this applies to your 89 subaru, but I hope it does.

Plus- If there is a U-Pull-it near you and if they have a car like your's, pull one off and put your weight on it to try to compress the piston. If you can compress it- you 'll need to replace it. New, I think they are about 80-100.00.

You can't always tell the tensioner is bad by compressing it - they may still seem tight, but they might not hold under all circumstances. I like to replace them with every other timing belt job. A pulley can also freeze up and cause a jump. I highly recommend checking them every belt change. I just spin them by hand and make sure they don't sound unlubricated and they all spin about the same amount of time and as freely as the others.
