Cat-less or what?

Post by smh0101 »

I am planning on getting an exhaust put on the SS and have heard of a lot of people going catless. I was planning on going full turbo-back and am worried about passing emissions in WA State... I called an exhaus shop and asked about catless exhaust and the guy darn near hung up on me but did tell me it is a $2500 fine to remove it.

So what options do I have?

I know there are threads about catylitics however I didnt want to hijack someone elses thread

Thanks
~Spencer

you'd be better off putting on a high-flow cat.

it has almost the same flow as a cat-less system.

or you could be creative like a few other guys and keep your stock exhaust but use a catless wrx downpipe with an exhaust cutout. That way you could still pass emissions because you would have the second cat in the midpipe, but then you can also open the cutout and have a completely free-flowing exhaust.

just a thought...

Our SS has the full 3inch with a high flow cat and a single resonator.

we passed emissions, and it sounds good, and the performance does not seem to suffer.

What exactly does the resonator do? Make it louder or quieter?

Quiets a bit...but most importantly removes the rasp sound

My car was catless before I bought it, put in a hi-flow 3" cat, it sounded 100% better, mellower, no rasp.

I don't see the logic of turning your car into a gross polluter for a negligible power gain, when you can do it right for only a little more. Performance cats run about $100.

About the only downside is, I don't see the afterfire flare anymore when I pop and burble on coastdown; the Cat acts as a flame arrestor. Used to get some nice flashes going thru the Holland Tunnel....
