Doug, since you're the engine master, could you help explain what's going on in this picture? I'm afraid I don't quite understand what I'm looking at. . .

I'll give it a shot and Doug can correct me. Subaru's new turbo diesel engine only offered in Europe and maybe other places. First flat diesel I believe. Chain driven Quad Cam heads, injectors where spark plugs usually are on the DOHC heads. turbo has a different placement point down in front. Looks like Variable valve timing also. Also looks look the oil pump is driven off a gear from the crankshaft and now on top of the engine. Variable intake runner lengths? Coated piston skirts?

That isn't generally something that has to happen until around 200k.

I'd still be curious if an EJ22T could be converted to diesel. Just not curious enough to spend my money.

by the time it was converted it would not resemble an EJ22 in any way except maybe the short block, which would have plenty of modifications, like cylinder sleeves

why is the turbo on the bottom? i might be wrong, cant see it too good, but i believe the thing on top driven off the crank is the injector pump because they are usually driven off the crank or a cam, and i dont see one on the other side

^^Correct. If you follow the lines from that pump, they run to the injectors. And yes, all injector pumps are run off the crank/cam gears (for proper injection timing control). Thus far, at least.
What I'm curious about is that dashpot in/on the intake mani. And the MPG figures.

As do I...

Chains are noisy, tough, easy to replace...and last 200k miles...what a great design!

anyone know what kind of gas mileage we are talking about?

you know something i was thinking about earlier?
no American car company makes their own diesels, GM's Duramax is made by Isuzu (thats no joke), Ford Powerstroke is an International, Dodge Cummins is well.....a Cummins, and Daimler-Chrysler's cars use diesels made by Benz

i dont know about other countries though, cause they have allot of diesel models we dont get

That sounds reasonable. I can't wait to see what it does when the boost is cranked up.

A diesel with a variable vane turbo? How could you not want to play with that?

I'd want to put it in something light and gear it up.

I've been following this for a while - the only "new" car I would consider would be a Turbo Diesel Forester for the wife.

word is 165hp/ 250tq, but I thought it was a 2.3L.... maybe I'm confusing all the car info in my head
and I heard 40mpg hwy :-D
