pulling timing?

Post by mgroshong »

ok i have a stock 91' ss, and i never have had a problem wence i have got it. well i have new plugs gaped properly, and a k & n panal filter.

well every once in a while it would drop from 9 ish lbs to 5 lbs, but it would only be temporary like say 20-30 min then back to full boost.

then about 3 days ago it would only boost 5 lbs. so i thought it might be the boost solinoid taking a shit on me.

well afte reading on here i saw that it could be the knock sensor.
so i go and check it out ans i think it has a crack in it. so i am planning on replacing that.

so now i wanted to double check that it was infact pulling timing, cause of the knock sensor. so i put on a t fitting in the wastegate line to bleed pressure and get the boost up to 9 lbs again.

so now that it is back at 9 lbs, it feels like it is just not making any power.

like it feels like it did at 5 lbs, will the knock sensor fix this?

yes the knock sensor will pull timing to a basic timing map when it reads a problem with a knock sensor.

Replace it and take out that T inline.

I just replaced my knock sensor a couple weeks ago and it works like a charm

Yeah...your knock sensor is bad...

When that is the case, the ECU pulls a whole shitload of timing, and therefore the car makes NO power...

ok thanks for the heads up, that was what i was going with as the knock sensor is cracked...

also it does it when i rev it if i rev part throttle it is ok but if i put it to the floor it just bogs...

so i will get a knock sensor and hopefully that will fix it

If you have a u-pull-it in your area try to get a knock sensor from a newer car - should cost $5 or less if you pocket it.
I think there was a revision of the k-sensor & the newer cars will have the revised part.

I repinned the plug on a '99 Impreza knock sensor (from my OBS) for use on the SS & it worked like a charm.
Boost jumped from 5psi to 8.7 & the CEL turned off.

well this hasn't fixed the car.it is completly stock minus the removal of the boost solinoid so i could rule that out as a problem. it is inpluged and out of the car if that is a problem? the car is running straight wastegate no boost controler or anything.

now i just replaced the cracked knock sensor with a new one from subaru and it did nothing.
i unhooked the battery for 20-30 min. and pushed the brakes and what not in order to try and reset the ecu but it did not work.

the symptoms:

i can rev the car to any rpm part throttle but as soon as it goes over a certain amount it will just bog very bad.

it drives fine but even at part throttle if it sees any amount of boost it will bog.

so with this said what could be causeing this strang problem. now i have had not 1 code show up. do i have a bad bulb?

is so frustraded ... haha i just need this thing to drive normal.

why dont you try to hook a scan tool to it. do you see the CEL when you first turn your key on? If not you prolly have a bad bulb. And plug the solenoid back in, dont take it out of the car. You can leave it unhooked, just dont un-plug it.
Kickin' it old-school.
