Prep work before bedliner spraying?

I've got some rust on my rear quarter panel (right side) due to the gas cap; it was covered by paint, but I took a pressure washer today and blew the paint off and exposed the rust, it's horrible and is starting to eat through the metal.

I thought I'd sand it out till I was down to bare metal, bondo up any spots that needed to be, and spraypaint that little section with bedliner, black or whatever doesn't matter to me because anything looks better than rust.

Is there any prep work one would do before the bedliner spray?

Eventually I'm going to do the entire car that way, I don't much care for it looking sexy (face it, 91 wagons are not sexy, post-facelift wagons maybe, but whatever) I want to go bedliner because I don't want to get out on the rally field and throw rocks up into my pretty paint, since bedliner is durable this is an obvious choice.

In the consideration of doing the entire car that way, I think it's prudent to strip the paint on it, right? or can you paint right over the paint and have it stick as if it were stuck to bare metal? Assuming of course there's no rust under the existing paint.

any tips/etc will help. thanks guys!

What does it say on the liner application notes? If you want to assure the best adhesion, I'd say at least scuff up the paint, if not strip it entirely. Although, like you say, it's going on the rally course -- not for show. So what's the harm? What about flat black instead? Easy touchup and its gotta be cheaper than bedliner. . .

I want something durable at least, I like the bedliner look so I figured I'd do that instead, duplicolor's bed liner stuff is about 9 bucks a can; I haven't started tonight. I did get an air sander (no electric ones available)

Unfortunately my 4 gallon 125PSI 2.2SCFM @ 90PSI air compressor cannot even begin to keep up with an air sander meant for 4CFM average that would probably consume 10CFM under load; so I'm going to buy a new air compressor tomorrow.

I painted my hood with the bedliner in the spray can also all around the car below the trim line. Just sanding will do. You won't need to strip all the paint because like the roll on liner it is made to go on after truck beds are painted.

If you do use the spray make sure you spray the same amount and as even as possible because that will affect the texture of it. Rough or smooth.

I bondo'd some portions of my right rear wheel well this evening due to excessive rust, lots of sanding involved on the 4x2" affected area; I hit it with the can of dupli-color bedliner stuff and was so pleased with the results and the evenness plus the texture that I did the rest of the fender, some of the running board and the rear bumper.

safe to say one can was not sufficient for even coating. the best portion of the task came from the area that I had been working in previously because I paid so much attention and laid on two or three coats, it came out with a nice even texture.

This weekend or sometimes this week I'm going to go out and get the gallon can, the included spray gun, a water filter for my 30 gallon air compressor and some masking tape/old newspapers/etc.

I intend to sand the area that is already painted (I didn't sand it previously) and lay it on smooth with the spray gun. I believe the entire kit including spray gun is $40 for a quarter of the stuff, a gallon is $65 - so I'll go with the quart first and see what I can get done.

Be sure to post some finished pics, as I'm sure everyone else is as interested in the final product as I am.
