ECU codes wont clear....

Post by cdanders@tconl.com »

Help,

I have three codes in my ECU found by connecting the two black wires.
Found the method of reading codes on Xmission page.

Am unable to erase or clear codes to see if my problem persists. I
have kept battery cables off overnight, I have removed battery cables
and touched them together but still have the codes without restarting
the engine.

What is the secret please?????

Thanks to all,

Carl

ECU codes wont clear....

Post by Josh Colombo »

Well it sounds like if those codes are still there, there is a problem with those sensors, if it keeps reocurring. What codes are in there? I think dave got the code info from my page, I dont' know if he copied the whole thing. If so go back and it also tells another way to put the car in diagnostic mode, which ALSO is suppose to clear the codes. But first, what codes are showing up?

ECU codes wont clear....

Post by Carl Andersen »

The car is a 93 Touring Wagon with almost 100,000 miles on it.

The codes are:

13, Cam angle sensor Been replaced
35, Canister purge solenoid valve, Ordered not replaced Yet
49, MAF occurred when I started the car with connector removed from the MAF

Chilton says to start with warm motor, shut it off, connect leads, and start it up. I just came from Barnes and Noble where I read this and plan to try it first thing in the morning.

Josh, I am still trying to sort out the intermittent loss of horse power upon acceleration that has been a thorn in my side for almost a year. You have been helpful from the beginning and I thank you.

My wife is driving this car on a daily basis and since the weather has been cold recently, "0 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit", it happens when the car has been warmed up for a few minutes, after about 6 - 7 miles at 45 to 50 MPH.

It stutters and stammers and sometimes dies. Always restarts. If you feather the throttle and are going 50 MPH it will usually fix itself and off you go. It would be normal for it to drop from 60 MPH to 35 before taking off.

I have changed the MAF, Cam Angle Sensor, Fuel Pump, Plugs, and Plug Wires. Also use premium gas. I thought when the fuel pump went out that it was probably the problem all along but no such luck.

The car performs as normal to me 99 percent of the time. Top speed of 122 by the speedometer and good acceleration at all speeds.

It is truly exasperating since it almost always works fine for me but I only drive it 10 percent of the time.

I am tempted to take it to the Subaru dealer and give him a chance at it but I don't have a lot of confidence in him since their number one tech told me the ECU wouldn't store error codes.

Someone mentioned a similar problem on this group about 2 months ago saying their turbo was sometimes very sluggish. I never did hear if he found a solution.

Any thought that the Air Temp Sensor might cause this. If it doesn't report the right temp the fuel mix could be off but could it be off enough to cause this type of problem?

Any help is welcome guys.

ECU codes wont clear....

Post by Josh Colombo »

Honestly the loss of power thing, really sounds like a bad MAF, however if you replaced it, I doubt you got two that are bad. From what you have said, I have two thoughts. One a faulty/bad wiring harness somewhere. My mom had an intermittant problem where her 90 toyota pickup would just die, for no ryme or reason, just die. The one dealer finally tracked it down to a bad wiring harness that went down by the exhaust manifold. The other thing could be that your ECU took a dump.

I would sorta think it was one of those things....if you have replaced the MAF. Was the MAF you got brand new?

Well those are some of my thoughts....not sure. If you can find a GOOD subie dealer..that may be a better option.

Josh

ECU codes wont clear....

Post by Carl Andersen »

I just got in from trying again to clear the errors and think I accomplished it.

I hooked up both connectors and did the driving test as described on Dave C's site and after driving it and shutting it off and then connecting the black connectors again it blinks quickly without any code.

I will check again to see if any errors show up.

The MAF I replaced was from my other Legacy. Deffinately not new. If the MAF error comes back I will get a new one.

Thanks again,

Carl

So... It thought I had cleared the codes but now when I hook up the
black connector to check for new codes the "Check Engine" light flashes

Thanks Bill.

That is what I was hoping for.

Unfortunately it died on my wife again this morning and no new error codes.
