how do u know when a turbo is about to crap out?

Post by dirtyhandssubaru555 »

i think my turbo is about to die. its coverd in oil and i would swear that i heard it stop spooling up in mid spool and the start right back up were it left off. just a couple of days ago i started to get this weird hesitation/vibrationg around 2-3k and then it picks back up around 4000. so how would i tell if its time to replace mine that has 190k miles on it?
my girlfriend finaly found out that i spent more money and time on my car then her. she was kind pist to say the least.

Do you have a boost gauge? Have you noticed any loss in power when you hear it stop spooling? The oil thing is a giveaway that the seal inside is leaking. so your turbo is prolly gonna crap out. I'd say pull the thing out and check it for shaft play, thats really the only way to know.

Buy one, and while your at it, get a new turbo. I'd try and find a Td04 from a wrx, you have to buy a 90* radiator hose from napa and cut it to fit, and you might have to add some silicone hose to the pressure side of things, but if you just run wastgate boost, you'll notice a bit more power, and way quicker spool. That is, if your stock. If your not stock, then, you know what to do.

Not all that hard, I put one in with a tmic in about a day. I had to make trips back and forth to various places, but I got it all done in the end.
