WRX tranny in 92 SS
If I were to put an '04 WRX 5mt into a '92 SS, what would I need other than the WRX's rear LSD? Trying to figure out all the little bits...axles, gear/pinions, whatever...

Im pretty sure you will need the drive shaft and the axels. I believe the WRX tranny uses male axel stubs unlike our female's. Im not sure if you have to swap hubs, the spline count may be different.

You'll have to swap the mechanical speedo assembly into the wrx trans.

You will need a wrx rear diff, rear axles, front axles, and that's about it. You can use the stock driveshaft by removing the nut and flange from the wrx and your current diff and swapping them.

Hub spline counts are the same on every 90+ Subaru except for the justy, loyale, and I think maybe the svx.Threshld1 wrote:no kidding? spline counts are the same on the hubs?

alright great info. Thanks.
I will be buying everything from someone, and I don't know if he will want to swap, should I just get the axle from him?BAC5.2 wrote:You will need a wrx rear diff, rear axles, front axles, and that's about it. I read somewhere about having to drill a hole in the bellhousing for the starter, any confirmation on that? Also, are the clutch types the same?BAC5.2 wrote:You will need a wrx rear diff, rear axles, front axles, and that's about it. difficult?Legacy777 wrote:You'll have to swap the mechanical speedo assembly into the wrx trans.
It shouldn't be. I believe all you have to do is swap the electro unit out with the older mechanical one.

You do need to tap the lower hole for the starter so you can bolt the starter down.
Very easy.

isn't the 02-05 WRX trannies a 3.9 final drive? Isn't that the same as a legacy SS VLSD final drive? If that is the case, wouldn't the WRX tranny be compatible with the VLSD in the SS?
Also if anyone knows, the 04 STI tranny seems to be a 3.9 final drive as well? Will that work with the original VLSD diff from the SS?

The WRX tranny is a 3.9 final drive, but they use a 1:1.1 gear in the center diff, so the rear diff is like 3.545 or something. However, you can get transfer gears from a 99+ RS (I got some new ones from subaru for $130) to convert the transmission to 1:1
Other options are Forester XT and Baja Turbo trannies, which are 1:1
And yes, the STI is 3.9, I dont know for sure that the diff bolts up to stock components, but I'll let you know in a week or two when mine arrives

so would i be able to use a wrx tranny, legacy ss center diff and rear diff. Then everything would match up to 3.9? Don't do much tranny work so what you're explaining to me sounds too confusing for me to do to convert from 1:1.1 to 1:1.
I would have to open the tranny up for that or is that all in the center diff?

Why, it is my understanding that all of the viscous center diffs (like our manual trannies have) are of the same layout...Splinter wrote:Im pretty sure you cant attach the legacy center diff to the WRX tranny.

Well. I started the swap. We have the tranny and rear diff/axles bolted up, and the shift linkage hooked up.
The center part of the speedo gear just unscrews and comes out. I think it was just a direct swap of the old one into the new tranny (my buddy did it while I was inside looking some stuff up).
An issue I ran into is that the slave cylinder doesn't seem to work. I think I will need one from an '04 or '05 WRX, which will hopefully go together with the stock master cylinder.
I did not tap the block for the second starter bolt, but there seems to be a lip on it which should hold it in place.
The transmission I am using is from an '05 WRX, which requires male ended front axles. The '02 and '03 WRXs use female axles like the Legacy.
So, some unexpected snags, but if I can find the parts I need and the rest goes pretty smoothly, it will hopefully work.
Edit: If anyone has male ended front axles, please let me know as I need them.
