I got a 94SS with Vf11 running a 3" cat-less downpipe to cutout/stock exhaust. I find it acts funny when i open and close the cutout too much (not too mention it boost creeps like a mofo) so I want to go to a 3" exhaust all the way with a hi flow cat somewhere in there. My issue is, however, I want an exhaust that will not be too loud. I still want to be able to hear my turbo, pbv (got the coffee mug mod) and cruise up to the house at 4am without waking everyone up (this is why i got the cutout). I have heard the flowmaster super 40 on a 3" with a hi flow cat on an ej22t and is sounds sick, but i fear it may be way too loud
sorry, I typed in no then forgot to change it. If you're going without cats and a fairly unrestrictive muffler it's gonna be loud. If you're using a cutout, why not use a stock exhaust and put the cutout before the cats?
I have a TurboXS (not the RFL) and it sounds much quieter than most. But still, even if it doesn't sound loud, the bass note carries, and people inside know when I pull up out front.

That is my exact setup, I have a 3"catless dp to my cutout then stock from the cutout back. My problem is that the car behaves weird if I open and close it to much. Also, when the cutout is open I get mad boost creep.
Rallysam, I realize I'm going to be somewhat loud I just don't want silly loud . Do you have any audio clips of your exhaust?

Let us know how it sounds...
I have a 3" DP to a Hi-Flo cat, then 3" pipe back to a Brullen twin tip. Great sound, quiet idle, really barks at WOT, but the drone at extended highway speeds gets a bit much sometimes. I'd like to fit a secondary silencer between the muffler and cat, something low profile and unrestrictive.
the invidia race cat-back with a non catted down pipe is fuckin hella loud.
not what your looking for lol.

I used a EZR D/P connected to a custom cat-back that was made with 3" u-bends, straight pipe & a $25 summit-racing 3" oval muffler (fabbed up in my buddy's garage).
It sounds good - not too loud, but definately not as quiet as stock - nice deep tone.
My Fujitsubo (3") equipped OBS is much louder.
How bad is the boost creep with the cutout?
I was thinking about installing one on my SS.

Bingo! This is the key. If you run a 3" catted turboback with a muffler, add a resonator if its still too loud. And if you want even more quiet put on one more. You reduce the noise without adding restriction (except for the cat & muffler).
How about a stealth-back? That's what I'm running and sounds about like stock WRX/STi (just a 'tad' louder). Catless, 3.00" DP and MP to WRX axleback. Motor is a 2.5 w/VF39. BTW, the larger the turbine diameter and flow the louder it will be.
Edit: You're still going to experience boost creep unless you get a proper boost control set-up, either through EM or a standalone controller.
