I locked up that motor (ej22) due to sandwich adapter leaks, went to the junkyard and luckily found a ej22t from a 95 impreza. i did the motor swap and all was good but i noticed a lil smoke from the exhaust, completely white - so i ordered head gaskets thinking it was burning water (1st problem). Well today, my waste gate became unplugged somehow and i ran about 25psi to my motor and noticed a knock shortly after and a huge plume of smoke followed, i pulled over and re-installed the vacuum lines, and drove straight home. knocking still continues and i was wondering if anyone had ideas...? i have pics and a couple vids that i took with my cam
dzx wrote:if the knocking is coming inside of the block, it's likely you bent a rod or destroyed a bearing.
well i pulled the engine and noticed heavy oil residue inside the exhaust openings on the bottom of the block and the exhaust valves were still wet looking... i had oil dripping out the headers when i picked the up and oil in my downpipe and inside the hot housing on the turbo... all had extreme amounts of oil deposits, and im guessing it started with the block. so i thinking rings??? but that seems like alot of oil for just rings
I thought you may have spun a bearing, but the crapping oil out of the exhaust sounds like something worse.
I've hit 20psi for like 1 second while setting things up in the past but I let off quick & all was well. This was on a small stock turbo, your turbo looks bigger than stock.
Did you run 25psi for long?
What turbo are you running - t3/t4 .63 AR exhaust / .50 AR compressor or something BIGGER??
No intercooling???
A few folks claim to have run more than 25PSI through stock EJ22T's with no issues.
not to hijack, but sweet- another Ohio person. Where in columbus? My girlfriend goes to school at Ohio Dominican Uni., I take the T-leg down to visit her all the time.

it jumped to 25 for less than 1/2 a second.. my eyes were on my boost gauge the entire time, didnt mean to go that high but it kicked so fast. yes, that is a t3/t4 hybrid, i have a intercooler, but havent decided to hook it up yet, just wanted to see what this turbo could kick out
I have a feeling you were running 25psi for more than a half of a second dude, when i was setting up my MBC i had it hooked up the wrong way and ran over 25psi for about 4 seconds.
your car has (unless you have a boost cut eliminator) a sensor that cuts your boost at 13.99 psi after 2-4 seconds.
this is to ensure no engine damage is done if there is an issue like hooking up something wrong.
a t/3 turbo and no i/c? not a good idea, if you were wondering "what the turbo could kick out" you should have just looked it up, i mean of course its gonna spool higher psi faster than a VF-11.... also.... you ABSOLUTELY DONT have an EJ22T if you got it out of a 95 impreza , the EJ22t was only offered in the legacys' and only until 94, unless the impreza was swapped, (which i highly doubt if the car didnt have an intercooler) you have an ej22e or ea, which would explain why you blew your car up so fast.
dont take this post the wrong way, im just trying to figure out whats going on.
if you decide to rebuild and have a 22t, go all forged internals and run 30psi safely!!!!

also, get an airfilter man! it costs about as much as a pack of cigs lolz

what other models were turbo, the block is a ej22, and the doner car did have a turbo, i still have the manifold with integrated wastegate from the block
I also thought EJ22T Impreza????, but the car is dual port so I figured hey you never know...
I thought the only dual port Imprezas were the 1.8s & 2.5s, both 2.2 Imprezas I have are single port (phase I & II).
A quicky way that may work to ID the motor would be to check the injector color - EJ22T's have pink injectors stock (these could have been swapped out) & a grid that looks like graph paper cast into the bellhousing area of the motor around the turbo.
If you did have a EJ22T with pink injectors, I believe you ran out of fuel before 25psi as those are just 370cc.
The ej22t only came in the legacies, you can turbo the E series engines no problem, the stock injectors max out at around 6-7 psi, unless you run a fuel pressure regulator.
the donor car may have been turboed but i doubt it was a 22-t, you have to completely swap all the wiring out of the legacy and put it in the impreza for it to work.
and with no intercooler on an engine that isnt designed to run boost is just begging for your car to blow up (hot as sh** air going into your engine= detonation=your car is blown up= that sucks

Melted exhaust valve (s), possibly, maybe a holed piston. I think it's a turboed EJ22E. Oil pan looks like it may be different and it has non-OEM exhaust. you also have to figure that it wouldn't have been in a JY were it an EJ22T due to resale and that if a guy swapped it in, he could easily pull it for sale before junking it.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

well after replacing the intake manifold gaskets suspecting a leak... still running extremely rich, pcv replacement next, but ive noticed extremely rich smoke coming from crankcase and valve covers... im talkin white visible unburnt fuel.. when i re-hook up the hoses to the intake, car runs even more rough and wants to stall... im thinkin its the valves staying open to some extent, and thats why im getting so much unburnt fuel thru my recirc tubes...???
